WhatsApp, Telegram both down for the count

LOL, not even a day and there is a mass look for Watsapp alternatives.
I wonder if the Zuk's expected this backlash?
The downtime of Watsapp has not helped matters either.

Telegram is very similar to Whatsapp - except it has better security (end to end encryption), as well as allowing you to be logged in with multiple devices. It uses an sms code to your phone to enable other devices. It also has a nice windows client (still in Alpha). So you can have it running on your PC, phone and tablet.

It's also open source and free.. though whatsapp is free for most - new users in some countries are paying $1 per year.

Edit: It has a Linux client, OSX too.. plus a bunch of others : https://telegram.org/apps

Are you in sales/marketing? You've convinced me, installing it now :)

Facebook: 1 billion active users.
Whatsapp: 450 million active users.

I don't think Zuk cares much for the naysayers.

Installed Telegram too. What sells me here is mobile and desktop clients. Bye Skype. By GTalk/Hangouts. Bye Whatsapp. As soon as all contacts adopt it of course.

Lol, I only just found out about it. The whatsapp downtime wouldn't have bothered me much.. it was only for a few hours.. but coupled with the fb news.. I started looking for an alternative immediately. Already got 4 friends/family on it and they love it.. I only really whatsapp with like a handful of people, so it's an easy move for me.

Now that I'm using it for a few hours - there are some nice little touches like when in a group chat - in the top bar it shows you how many members are currently online.. if you delete a message or chat on one device, it clears on all clients.

You can log out all sessions from any client, and that will require sms otp to log in again from the other clients. I'm really liking the windows app.. it's very light and fast, and looks good.

Is WeChat no good, heard about that as an alternative quite some time ago?

I'm not getting my activation code via SMS for Telegram. It keeps on saying SMS sent to xxxx 'We will call you in 0:xx'...

I don't get an activation code or call...

I see on twitter they said they've got 4 million new users since yesterday.

Found another interesting feature..

The Self-Destruct Timer in available for Secret Сhats. To set the timer, go to Secret Chat Info (tap the small picture in the top-right corner of the chat screen), then Set Self-Destruct Timer to a desired time limit. The timer is applied to a message the moment it is displayed on the recipient's screen (two green ticks). As soon as the time runs out, the message disappears from both devices and leaves no trace.

Please note that the timer only applies to messages that are sent after the timer was set. It has no effect on earlier messages.
