Telegram is very similar to Whatsapp - except it has better security (end to end encryption), as well as allowing you to be logged in with multiple devices. It uses an sms code to your phone to enable other devices. It also has a nice windows client (still in Alpha). So you can have it running on your PC, phone and tablet.
It's also open source and free.. though whatsapp is free for most - new users in some countries are paying $1 per year.
