WhatsApp, Telegram both down for the count

100 SMSes per second isn't what I would call a lot but maybe one registration SMS per hour was all it was ever designed to cope with.

Update (23 February 2014, 00h48): WhatsApp reported that its services have been restored. The instant messaging service was contacted for comment, but a spokesperson did not immediately respond to email.

From Sapa:

WhatsApp, the messaging app Facebook is buying for $19 billion, is having technical trouble.

The service went down for several hours Saturday afternoon. Associated Press reporters noticed that the app wasn't functioning starting at about noon PST.

Neither WhatsApp nor Facebook responded to emails seeking comment.

On Twitter, a verified WhatsApp Inc. account did not mention the problem, but an unverified account called WhatsApp Status said the service was experiencing server issues and it hoped to be back up shortly.

Service outages are common for rapidly growing technology companies, and the WhatsApp Status account has tweeted about an outage about once a month going back through May.

WhatsApp, launched in 2009, has 450 million users globally. Facebook Inc. CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicts it'll reach 1 billion in a few years.

Someone care to explain Telegram and how it differs from all the messaging apps?

I'm only sticking with WhatsApp because everyone has it.

Telegram is very similar to Whatsapp - except it has better security (end to end encryption), as well as allowing you to be logged in with multiple devices. It uses an sms code to your phone to enable other devices. It also has a nice windows client (still in Alpha). So you can have it running on your PC, phone and tablet.

It's also open source and free.. though whatsapp is free for most - new users in some countries are paying $1 per year.

Edit: It has a Linux client, OSX too.. plus a bunch of others : https://telegram.org/apps

Sounds good to me.

The moment Whatsapp requires a FB account I guess I'm out of it.

Open Source... I approve!
