Telegram calls use significantly more data than WhatsApp

Telegram voice calls consume substantially more data than WhatsApp’s, even with reduced data usage enabled, a MyBroadband test shows.

WhatsApp and Telegram have useful built-in measuring tools that show how much data you spend on different parts of the apps, such as calls and messages.

Would it have been too much to ask to include SIP (G729, PCM) and maybe Skype in that comparison to get a fair overview of the industry

And also Signal please! Having the free and open source and independent option compared to the commercial options will be great!

WhatsApp calls are made directly between devices. Think a central server is used to initiate and ring the other device, but otherwise, it's a direct connection.

Does Telegram use the same?

Unless you also comparing the signal quality of each app (not to mention latency etc) the raw data number are entirely meaningless. Could be like saying dialup is better than fibre because over 5 min of use dial up uses a tiny fraction of the data that fibre uses.

Misleading, poorly considered article.
