Please state the benefits of each one and which you prefer and why. Mods can we have a poll also please?

99% percent of my contacts use Whatsapp. For me that outweighs the cool techy things that Telegram offers. Installed Telegram a few months ago, have used it maybe twice. And I don't really care that much about the things Telegram offers to switch.

Telegram isn't know (not saying they dont - but Ive seen no reports) for mining personal info and data and selling it to third parties.

Telegram.
no need for a number, so managing groups is easier.
the larger group size also means neighbourhood watch groups can be all inclusive.

also secret chat is very very useful.

and no sharing your info with Facebook even when you opt out.

voice calling in telegram is also more stable after the first call when your phone has been calibrated.

and in line gif search.

bots are also insanely powerful.

battery usage on telegram is much lower than whatsapp, even with multiple chats going. whatsapp drains battery even with no active chats.

did I mention telegram desktop yet? because once verified it does not require your phone to be online where whatsapp does.

I don't know anyone on Telegram, so I don;t see the need to install it at this time. Everyone is on whatsapp...

Going to the play store->
Whatsapp: 1 Billion downloads
Telegram: 100 Million downloads

remember when Facebook had a few hundred users and mySpace had millions?
weird how people magically moved to the better service when word got out hey?

but now instead of moving on to better tech, we have people who say things like "everyone is already on myspace, why do I need to try out facebook"

oh wait, we are talking telegram vs whatsapp here...

Telegram:
Not owned by Facebook.
Open API meaning that anyone can write a client for it. Which means you don't really have to worry about Whatsapp pulling support for your device. It also allows for some interesting control applications. Some people have written apps that they use for remote monitoring of hardware and such.
Messages seem to be delivered faster.
Proper desktop and tablet clients.
Stickers (my mom seems to spend her life looking for cat stickers).
Supports calls between desktop and phone.
Has self messaging (very useful if you want to easily transfer small things between devices).
Group bots are very useful as well.
Secret chats are also very useful, especially self destructing ones. If I have to share a pin or a password with someone, I setup a self-destructing session.

Whatsapp:
You can use it to tell people about Telegram.

My immediate social network consists of friends and family, and almost everyone is on Telegram.

Telegram Benefits:

* I can hide from people because most of my contacts don't use it
* I can access the same chats from both my phones, tablets, and desktop at the same time
* Chat search is much faster
* GIF search is a lot of fun
* Secret chat has come in useful
* Ockie is on telegram

Whatsapp - just because it is easy to use and goes with me regardless of where I am.

I can't speak for Telegram since I don't have it installed, but I will only shift once there is a major migration to a new platform when the old one is no longer used or offers the same experiences...

this thread is awesome.
telegram people give reasons and cave men say they will move when everyone else does.

kind of proves how ignorant whatsapp users are

whatsapp being linked to your phone number - may seem like a downside - but that's the reason majority of our contacts will have it.

that is great for your contacts.
but you are forgetting about people in groups who now have your number.

you know that annoying person you managed to dodge who is a friend of a friend of a friend? but somehow you are all in the same group that you have muted 90% of the time?

yeah they have your number now...

most of people had whatsapp before groups was even a thing- it was / is the sms replacement - if i have your number and you on whatsapp - i can sms you for R2 or whats app you for a fraction of that. which one would most people go for. hence majority of people are on it - what i am saying is telegram can all the features now - the fact that whatsapp is based on your phone number is the reason its usage is so high - downside or not.
