WhatsApp testing cross-app chats

WhatsApp is testing what could be one of its biggest feature updates in several years — the ability to message users on other apps.

WABetaInfo reports that a "Third-party chats" section has appeared in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8 update.

Think this has to do with the new EU DMA Gatekeeper status requiring that certain services with a certain amount of users or above being required to "play nice" with other third party apps and services.

into the archives I dive....memento pls :

I remember the plugin ... MXit were pretty developer friendly ... I remember working on a daily quiz type game for MXit using WML that would render in the text interface.

This is stupid...

Just standardise a protocol and force cellular operators to support it. Cellular operators not supporting RCS is what led to its slow rollout.

That way, you receive your messages in any app of your choice.

RCS is now pretty much default on Android and is turned on by default on Google Messages app. Problem is many people install Truecaller and make it their default messaging app...then RCS stops working. Truecaller needs to integrate their app with Google Jibe to make RCS work.

Another problem is Apple iMessage...but that is already on the EU's radar as a gatekeeper app. They got away with it this time...but up for review in 5 months. Will have to wait and see what happens then.
