WhatsApp

Nonsense.

iPhone WhatsApp is awesome. Saves tons of airtime since most people with smart phones have it too.

There are sometimes problems with Blackberry users - strange behaviour and delayed messages. Very seldom though. :)

Meh, im quite sad I have to agree with you on this one, I normally prefer arguing with you :p :p :p
The iphone version of the app is the best I have used. before anyone gets pissy I have used the Nokia and android versions too.

I think its cool, haven't noticed anything concerning the battery life or airtime on my Nokia.

Just think, if I'm right about this, I'm probably right about other stuff too. :p :D

How is that possible? The app doesn't need to remain open in order to receive messages. Good to know about the data costs being so low. Everyoneshould get this, seriously.

Actually it is very much possible. The app still has to remain open in the background in order to maintain contact with the server and it has to keep your data connection connected as well. The latter can drain your battery a huge amount.

Staying open in the background does not drain your battery.

Push notifications do, I will agree on that. Very marginally though.

132 total messages, 403k used according to the usage stats on my whatsapp. Not exactly a data hog. Even out of bundle at R2 a meg thats less than a buck.

Sent from my GT-I9000 using MyBroadband Android App

To stay open in the background it has to be running its own thread, which in turn consumes CPU cycles and requires RAM. It may not reduce power drastically, but it does.

My data usage stats From 1st Dec till present:

Total sent: 10.9 Mb (1731 messages)
Total received 9.9Mb (1667 messages)

3 months, average usage per month 7Mb

Seems like that's accounting for ALL data usage, including pics/vids/sounds.

I have about 40 applications open in my dock that all open instantly. Does not affect battery life any more than if I had a few.

So ya, maybe on your phone you are right.

I know people who use it. Uses next to nothing in airtime/bandwidth. Plus they can chat to people from all over the world. What a pleasure!

thats all it costs ??... ok ,not so bad then, just hope Google lets me pay for it by then.

Yeah, it's $1 per year. They might make it more expensive, but I would happily pay more for this awesome app.

I think you can pay the developer directly, you don't have to go through the Android Market....but would also prefer to do it via Google. Peace of mind.

Let's hope Google show SA some love and bring us paid apps soon.

I like the concept, just not the execution. The missus and I tried it to keep in touch with iFriends overseas but it was too buggy and unreliable so we ended up deleting it. Many of them have since moved across to the bberry anyway so it's no biggie.

I don't have it on my phone. :) That is just the basis of how an application will be required to function in the background.

I find the blackberries just too slow to keep up, obviously the app running in the background is too much for it.

It works fantastic on a mobile OS that can properly multitask & proper hardware.
