Whatsapp

@Ebendl
I see your point, Sorry I must then apologies for offending Blackberry users!
I have used Blackberry before, but find that Nokia is a better Business tool for me!

People, you seem to be missing the point I'm trying to make!
Albert, one day when you big and you grow out of Social networking, you see that your BBM is outdated!
Whatsapp on BB, is crap, join the big boy, and see what you missing out on!
Besides, your Blackberry life is soon coming to a end!

Agreed tha by switching to the lower 2G network it does infact better the battery life, but as Mike Hoxbig pointed out, it does become a problem using a slower connection!
Task managers seem the be a better option for now!

@ebendl
Please go back to my first post, and read it very carefullly!
Whatsapp is a awesome IM, I personally feel it's better than BBM! Read properly!!
I'm not complaining about the Application, I complained about the Battery burden!
Also, the thread was posted to give people who felt the same an idea on how to solve the battery burden!

Off-topic...

It looks like someone played a practical joke on you by switching the . and ! keys on your keyboard. You might want to switch it back.

If Nokia works for you, great. I know people who still stick with their Nokia Communicator 9300i!

I think the new Nokia Windows Mobile 7 phones should have solved most of these problems in any case as WhatsApp is now supported on WMO. Would be interesting to see if the Lumia's are as popular as the previous generation Nokias!

I also wonder if the new Nokias based on S40 - in particular the Asha 303 - have fixed these WhatsApp problems? Considering they come out of the box with WhatsApp installed... http://europe.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-asha-303/specifications

I do agree that running Whatsapp on a Blackberry is a better option.
I think that what I meant to say was, Whatsapp on Blackberry is very bland and lacks the conversation bubbles and smilies that is with the Nokia symbian versions!
I do understand that there are different versions of Whatsapp and that I'm basing my observations between the Blackberry 8900/9000, and Nokia E72.
I do again apologies for my remarks earier, and wish to retract my comments regarding Blackberry!

I make full use of whatsapp on my N8 and really dont have a problem with battery usage. So i dont bother with any hacks at switching whatsapp conectivity off.
just charge my phone before i go to bed and i use it the whole day so realy dont see this as a problem like th OP does.

I concur, my N8 lasts 1.5 - 2 days with general usage, I leave Whatsapp running the whole time (GSM), I surf a couple sites, play music over the radio with the transmitter, use whatsapp a lot, occasional sms/call.. I don't really know what some some of you are going on about..

I have my internet constantly on recieving over 50 emails a day and chatting allot on whats app no problem Got a Samsung galaxy S2 and it works wonders. People on the blackberry fail train need to see that there are better things.

Wow nokia is still alive... haha lol i wonder what rubish phones they have come out with now lol.
From what i have seen in GSM arena they are way behind apple and majority of the andriod providers.

Um, I love my N8 with Belle 111.030.0607.. Sure it's not as fancy as Android, but it's pretty and does everything I need, I don't spend my entire life on my phone. It's cool if people NEED crazy apps and whatever else, but I'm perfectly happy. Holds my music, doubles as an excellent camera etc.

From the reports not really :)

Well to be fair Nokia is promising a fix.

The Nokia Lumia 800 promises to bring you the “amazing everyday,” but many UK users have found the “everyday” part to stand for daily charging. To be perfectly correct - multiple daily charging as the Lumia 800 seems to experience a battery drain issue.

“I had it charged last night and when I got up in the morning it was down to 35% from just sitting there. … I don't use it that much during the day but it seems to go down really fast. I'm currently at 47% and it estimates 1 hour left,” user mkr10001 kicked off the discussion at Nokia Support a couple of days ago.

The Lumia 800 has only been available for a few days in the UK, but the poor battery life problem has already been noticed by quite a few users. Nokia did however announce the 7740 update that was supposed to improve battery life. Most initial UK Lumia 800 buyers report having the 7.10.7720.68 Mango version, while the latest one should be the 7.10.7740.16. Some however have already updated and are still facing the same issue.

“I just had similar problem with my Lumia 800... it was on full charge before i went out....made a couple of calls, took a couple of pics. Wifi was swictched off....and after 1 hour, the phone went dead!!! Couldn't even switch it back on after putting it back on charge again....completely dead!!! Phone is running latest OS - 4470....which was meant to fix battery issues [sic]” commenter RajC said.

Some users have als reported the battery going flat overnight after being nearly fully charged and the phone turned off for the night. Hopefully, Nokia will deliver a fix soon, but in the meantime do let us know - have you experienced any battery problems with your Lumia 800?

On the whatsapp problem, its not the application at fault, more the device as older devices where not meant to be always on data devices.

You see this is where I get confused. Maybe I don't fully understand the dynamics of the technology but I've always believed whatsapp makes use of push notification technology. So whatsapp on an iPhone, Android or BB is not constantly running in the background but actually dormant until a message gets pushed to it via the whatsapp servers... This lack of push notification support between Nokia and whatsapp servers results in whatsapp not working on Nokias unless the app is constantly running in the background and therefore draining the devices battery...

Correct me if I am wrong...

You are right, but that is exactly the problem, Older Nokia devices lack this ability to have push + always on 3G.

So it still boils down to lack of support from the device.

Push notifications rely on an always-on connection. This means that you can have the application "closed" (i.e. running in the background), and when a message is received by the server it is "pushed" to the device. The device then associates the message with the application, allowing you to "open" the application and view your message.

There's a bit of confusion about this - a push notification doesn't mean that the application is completely closed, or that an internet connection is only initiated when there is a message ready to be received.
