Sorry to be pedantic, but that isn't really 14% though - it's 14% of the amount including 14%. So it's technically ~12.28%.

I know but its a little more than 10% and it is a quick way to not need to do math.

Bad service is lower on tips. I have given no tips before if service is bad enough. Acceptable service gets a 10% tip, and the better the service from there on out, the higher the tip.

My wife used to be a waitress for years so she always gives a decent tip because she always tells me she knows what they're going through and what they're getting paid.

If it wasn't for her always inserting MY BANK CARD, of which she knows the pin, into the machine, I'm not sure I would even tip at all. I'm stingy like that. The good news for the waiters is that I never go out without her

I fully agree with you, but if your waiter is actively snorting drugs (not sure what he took and I dont care) in the bathroom while you are waiting on our drinks order, on a quiet night for 20 min?

you get your drinks, ask for the bill, call the manager, inform him what you saw, do not tip pay your bill and leave. also never returned to the place.

Yeah, again, that is an extreme example. I've never had a waiter go to the kackhuis to go snort coke or whatever, and I'm sure that that is NOT a common thing diners experience.

exactly. this was my one time I did not tip. an extreme case, I have given 5% because of the wrong order. as in we got 2 pizzas when we ordered 2 pastas, waiter not paying enough attention. his night sucked.

What ever you feel like it. You agree to pay the price listed on the menu for the food. The tip is extra and not mandatory it's a nice gesture/custom to tip a waiter that gave good service but that is completely voluntary.

I had a waitress that got 3 of 6 of the items ordered totally wrong and took an hour to bring a glass of water. She got no tip. That was my only non-tip so far.

Oh, and the other day I had a waiter enter R360 instead of R560 on the machine, luckily I pay attention and saw the mistake and handed the machine back to him without entering my pin and telling him "you are screwing yourself", he was very grateful for me notifying him of the mistake.

If they are very jovial or keep bothering me to ask if I'm happy, then I sometimes feel like not tipping, but as a rule I just mentally add 10% to all the prices on the menu and that is what I pay. If the service is bad then I might speak to the management or simply go elsewhere in future, same as I'd do for any business.

The first case represents what tips really are, which is a way for restaurants to pretend their food is cheaper than it really is and avoid having to pay their staff a decent wage. The whole improving service argument is a load bull****. We're dealing with an industry where it was common to charge the staff if a patron left without paying, which tells me a lot about their attitude to their staff.

Tipping is basically a form of corruption.

I think this needs to depend on the venue. Casual venue means they can be more casual, the more expensive the place, the more professional they need to be.
