When is it acceptable not to give a tip?

Is it acceptable to only tip a waiter when you receive good service, or must you tip them by default?

For example: If you receive bad service, do you tip 10%, and when you receive good service do you tip 20%?

Or do you tip a standard amount for good service, and then tip nothing for poor service?

Average service 10%. Great service more.

Service will have to be really, really bad to not have any tips at all. Like order is forgotten, combined with cold food, combined with incorrect order etc. All at the same time.

Bonus tip if they're friendly and strike up conversation.
 
Bad service is lower on tips. I have given no tips before if service is bad enough. Acceptable service gets a 10% tip, and the better the service from there on out, the higher the tip.
 
No tip if the service is bad - I explain to them why they're not getting a tip.

10% for average service with R20 minimum even if the bill is R75. Will go up to 20% for good service.
 
The only reason I still tip if the service is bad, is because I don't wanna **** where I eat. Next time they'll remember you and arrange a "special order".
 
Tipping was established as a way to ensure a quality service for a non recurring patron of an establishment.
Therefore if you tip when bad service is rendered, you are literally defeating the point of the system.

If they don't screw up and I get a good meal, I will generally round up the tip to the nearest 0 or 5.

If something happens like someone gets cold food or they mix up an order, but it gets sorted out. The tip gets rounded down to the nearest 0 or 5.

If I simply get forgotten about, I will simply forget to tip.

Then again, there isn't much point in tipping nowadays with minimum wage.
 
I was at Gecko Lounge the other night. The waitress threw my food on the table. :mad:
Tipped her anyway.
 
Good service: 10 - 20%

Bad service:
Me - Would you like a tip?
Waiter/es: Yes please Sir
Me - Brush up on your skills and next time I may leave you some money.
 
Can never quite bring myself not to tip at all, but if the service is bad I will tip exactly 10% calculated to the cent.

I have only ever left no tip.

on that occassion I called over the manager, and explained what happened, paid the bill and told him to deal with his staff.

bad service I give 5% delibirately, work it out in front of them and explain what they did wrong.

if there was nothing special its 10%

on average I tip 14%, because the amount is already shown on the bill as the vat and I am lazy.

sometimes I will tip 20% or even more for really good service.

when using zapper I sometimes round up to the nearest 100 or 50 when giving a tip, after the obvious 10% tip I mean.
 
10% is the benchmark for average service. Either more or less depending on service quality...

It's not really 14% then, it's less. That VAT is on your order. The tip is on the amount incl VAT...

Sorry to be pedantic, but that isn't really 14% though - it's 14% of the amount including 14%. So it's technically ~12.28%.
