Until the government outlaws them. A person was arrested earlier in the week for using a lamp to defend himself. It's not about guns alone - it's about the right to self-defense. Oh, and it is in fact illegal to carry a fixed blade over a certain size. Also, while a knife may work fine against one opponent, even armed - yes, I'm aware of the 7-meter rule - it'll be damned near useless against multiple attackers unless they're also unarmed or you're Jet Li.

We'll give your knife to a 50kg woman and see if she can hold off a 100kg rapist, shall we? Or to a wheelchair-bound paraplegic, and we'll see if he can outrun criminals or defend himself with a knife. Or to a 70 year old facing off against two young men in his home.

Don't bring a knife to a gunfight.

LOL, sheesh. Seriously, quit whatever you're doing now and move to America. The NRA needs a spokesmen like you.

Of course a knife won't be the best solution for all situations but neither is a gun.

Fallacies:
The usadojo article assumes that the person armed with a firearm isn't also carrying a knife, and also assumes that a losing firearm user doesn't have martial arts training. I always carry a knife, and so does anyone who has actually attended a decent self-defense course and taken in what the instructor said.
Also, a firearm is *heavy*. Makes a good weapon even out of battery.
You'll note no mention of multiple opponents. Sure, you've got Tony the wrench's gun out of battery... pity his buddy Solomon is filling you with lead.

Solution: get a gun, learn to use it. Get defensive training if you're serious about self-defense. A knife alone isn't going to help you.

But a gun is a better bet. When you state that people should rather get a knife, it sort of gets my hackles up. I have this thing about untruths, you see. Part of why I wouldn't be a good spokesman.

No tool is perfect, and it's best to have options. Yes, knife-fighting is deadly, and yes, it can be a solid defensive option - but a) a knife isn't going to keep you out of a fight like a firearm can and b) knife fighting is far more limited than firearm use.

Ofcourse it hackles you up. You're the guns biggest fanboy, if I was to say guns were the root of all evil you'd probably source bible verses that say otherwise.

Remember though, guns could possibly make you more of a target for criminals. I base this on the 3 neighbours who were held up and had firearms stolen. Its the primary reason why my dad doesn't have a firearm. Also, you could certainly slash you're wrists or something but the likliehood of a fatal suicide attempt is alot higher when a firearm is involved than a knife and you have to be alot more responsible (read: anal) when owning firearm than a knife aswell.

Suicide attempts and even death rates remain constant through firearms bans. All that happens is that people use different methods. To paraphrase you, anyone can slit their wrists. My ex-girlfriend tried to kill herself by overdosing on her mom's cancer medication. There are all sorts of methods.

I have no problem with being responsible, and I believe that anything that encourages responsibility is a good thing. Society and the mass media seem geared to the idea that no-one is ever ultimately responsible for anything. That circumstances are to blame, or even inanimate objects. It is my sincere belief that bringing back personal responsibility and accountability is a neccessity for a healthy society.
