When to start grade R

Well, lots of black kids in ex model c schools and who schooled with white kids can say the same and I'm pretty sure you will deny racism has a role there.

Unfortunately as I said before, high school is a very judgemental environment and I'm not sure the white guys who are popular go through it.
And the primary school kids? I never denied racism didn't happen, if you read further up where I said some groups would start with other groups in the 90s... Kapisch?

Nope bullying still happens in SA, just because a place says it's strict against bullying means nothing.

To add to that, bullying even happens in all white classes. The very soft guys and nerds who are different are very likely to have a very hard time.

Yes it does, but you seem to be fixated on that part... Also there are no white classes anymore, the country is 90% black and schools are 90% black. It's like you're aware there are no white suburbs, schools, areas and and now right?

I shipped my nephews who lived with me, off to a boarding school when they turned 5.

Best decision I made.

Loads of private schools only have whites in a class. Try checking the Midlands schools if you want a black-free learning environment.

Oh I'm not the one who keeps bringing it up, just saying we're in Africa, there's a slim chance of black free classrooms.

I pefer my kids go to a relatively westernised classroom myself.

Horses for courses though.

Normally in South Africa grade 1 is started in the year the child is 6 or will turn 6 by 30 June. For a few years that was shifted to age 7, but it changed back years ago. Grade R would be one year earlier.

There’s no real harm in waiting the extra year though if you feel your child isn’t ready. In other words apply the short lived age 7 rule. If you do wait no evaluation would be required because legally the school has to take a child.

Unfortunately typical schools try to stratify children by grade, and hence age, instead of encouraging mixing. Older and younger children interacting is better for social development.

It was changed to when they turn 6 regardless of the month, it was June yeaaaars ago. But as we found out that doesn't always work for kids born at the end of the year.

There is about as much zero tolerance for bullying as there is for anything in SA. I've seen private schools, government schools they are big on the talk of no bullying but it happens and because the schools put the facade of the no bullying sometimes it can actually be harsher and often the school can make it worse.
Even when I was in school there was zero tolerance for bullying, but it still happened.
Generally I view zero tolerance policies as an indication of something that isn’t tackled properly. Dealing with bullying as with competing over clothing really requires tackling the root causes.

The old rule in South Africa meant born at the end of the year was not an issue, since the before 30 June part of the rule dealt with that.

The government still has the rule on their site - https://www.gov.za/services/basic-education/admission-school, although they refer to the grade R age, but it amounts to the same thing.

I personally feel like you should enrol your child when you feel like they are ready to begin their academic journey. You don't have to delay this because of age. A lot of intelligent kids finish highschool at 16,17. Skipping grades is also pretty common both early and later on in life. Finishing schooling (primary, highschool and university) as early as possible means that your child can accumulate more experience than thier peers and potentially earn a higher salary
