Where are all the tablets in SA?

I'd actually have considered a Windows tablet if one could remove the Windows from it and install one's preferred Linux distribution, they have pretty decent specs generally. I know some of them can do that, but then some are locked down to Windows which isn't cool. The other issue being they're prohibitively expensive.

Half are still running android 5. Almost all of them only have 1GB Ram, or screen resolutions of 1024x600, or they are makes that have no reviews available anywhere on the web, so you have no idea if they are any good.
So far for a 7" tablet the only options seem to be the lenovo tab 4 16gb or Huawei mediapad t3 16gb- but that's only available through Increadible connection for R1899. I can't believe no one else sells it.

I ordered one the other day 640 grams, 12". Will see how it goes once it arrives. It should be annoying as hell as a tablet.
 
It’s pretty much an iPad or Galaxy Tab. Some of the other tablets are inferior in build quality with dodgy OS’ running on them.

Let us know how it goes. I'd be keen to find out whether it's unlocked and can have other OSes installed.

Not true takealot has the levono tab3, tab4.The tab4 both the 7inch and 10 inch is on the websites they also have no name brand tablet with 2 gig ram and higher display red. While its not any remotely like you get on gearbest they have a reasonable selection.The big issue is suppliers are targeting budget and midrange section of the market.

You should really blame the importers for lack of selection
 
With regard to the tablets out there, all midrange tablets, supporting 2gig and min screen res of 1280 x 800, you honestly don't need much higher then that, any thing higher is going to cost a lot more, it's going to take while before we see 3gig 64gig rom tablets in SA, and that is mostly due to costs, but 2gig ram is slowly trickling down and becoming the norm.

Maybe the phablets have something todo with it? Most areas where I use to see tablets have been replaced by things like the surface or macbook air or any other of the 13" variants.

Apple and Huawei happened.

Apple is probably big with the ipad line, samsung is the alternative to ipads, lenovo is that budget kid trying to make waves.
Seeing most people settle with smartphones these days, and huawei is taking over the market very fast. Even telkom is pushing huawei sales, wonder if there is some deal between them there.
 
You do get some good Lenovo 10" Android tablets for R2k but you have to go around and see them in action for yourself at Game. On the high-end Android front there's the Galaxy Tab S2 which is a bit old but gets regular Android updates.
 
I imported a Galaxy Tab S3 in the beginning of the year from Amazon. It was just so much cheaper doing that than going for anything that was available here at the time.
 
Tablets last a long time for casual use cases (browsing, YouTube, insta, Facebook etc.). Without people upgrading constantly, the market can't support many manufacturers and SKU's...there's no ROI on bringing new models out each year for the smaller players.

I have a Nexus 7 2013 that still does everything I need it to (Plex, YouTube, twitch).
 
Surface book is just not meant for the value for money ideal. I bought my wife her current Acer Switch 10V and it's quite a solid performer that can be used as a notebook and as a tablet, pity about the price and limited configuration options here in SA.

:) my old Asus memo pad 10" is still on 4.2. But the specs are still good. OK the battery doesn't last that long anymore. Still bought it from Kalahari many moons ago.
