Where is my bandwidth?

well i have spent the past hour or so phoning this that and the next person. eventually i got hold of a number for the fraud section and contacted them. spoke to a person who said i must open a case of fraud at the police station and this case must be investigated thoroughly.
the funny thing is is that i spoke to a person at 10215 who confirmed that he could see that the 800megs didn't come from my computer?????
i am definitely going to follow this through because i'm paying for this adsl and someone is stealing from me. someone has to start the ball rolling and as god is my maker it's going to be me.
i am mad about this.
 
I bought a 1gig account from a ISP once, the sunday evening. I went to work the next day and the evening came home, loaded the username and passwd on my router and wham, all my bandwidth was used already.

The first techie just told me my bandwdith was used, sorry, buy more. I did not accept that and said I want a more acceptable answer ASAP. The next answer I got was that it was a technical glitch with their billing software and that he reseted my account. Make waves is my advice!! :D
 
I'm not really the type to kick up a fuss too much. I'd rather try to work through the problem with the ISP and if the answer's still not satisfactory, I'll change my ISP.
 
Scream and shout, then do it some more, just make sure you dont blow a capillary in your head.
 
well i have laid the charge of fraud at the police station. let's see what happens next. someone has to take a stand.........we all need to take a stand.
you should have seen the faces of the policeman :p it was classic because it's not like i'm opening a fraud or theft case for something you can actually see :p. but like i said to the policeman, i am paying for this bandwidth and someone is stealing it from me just because you can't see or touch it doesn't mean telkom can get away with it.
 
Cybersmart sent me the hourly stats they get from Telkom. Took me while but I could cleary see high usage at a time when I was at work (and laptop with me of course).
 
gSpot, if I where you I would setup some bait, perhaps you could catch them that way.

Open your connection of for a day and monitor it. Then go and ask your neighbours from some brown sugar while at the same time you can have a sneaky look for any computers.

You might be able to narrow it down this way.

Just a thought.
 
The thing is though that I know every one of my neighbours personally. My router is in a basement and I checked my radius of my wifi and it didn't even reach my cousin's kid's room 5 meters away.

What would I use to monitor though? LOL I think that was actually part of my initial start of this post!

Should you dispute this - please lodge a complaint with them.

I've been asking around and apparently there's been

i still don't get how they can actually say that the usage came from your phone line and IP address if you not there.

my friend went away during the first weekend of july. left friday and returned monday morning. monday morning being the 3rd. she logs onto her ADSL and lo and behold she's used 2.3 gigs??????????? this is a person who never ever uses her 3 gigs for the month. if she uses 1.5gigs that's a lot. so she emailed abuse at telkom and they gave her back the bandwidth. she had evidence of no one being home i.e. flight tickets etc. i bet they weren't going to argue that one.

now tell me someone in telkom is not stealing the bandwidth? :confused:
 
I have two telkom accounts, one for each of my pc's.

On saturday the 23rd of august we had a break in at my house, my pc was stolen. This is the account that i use on that pc.

How is it possible to download if I don't have a computer?!?!?!

My other telkom account has been active the entire time... The stats are there to show it. Called Telkom earlier today and told them that i have opened a case of theft against them and are talking to my lawers about how to proceed with legal matters.

Cybersmart have come to the party and are refunding my 3gb. They still maintain though that the stats are correct and that my wifi security is the problem. So I'm going to put some effort some effort into being able to prove one way or the other where the problem lies next time.

So far, my only option on mac seems to be tcpdump. Unless I get some PC hardware and set up a proper firewall - though I don't have the inclination/space to go that route.

I think from:

Start -> Settings -> Network Connections -> LAN Connection -> Support -> Details... -> Physical Address

Like I said, I think :p I'm sure there's shorter ways...
 
Command line: Windows: ipconfig /all
UNIX: ifconfig -a

But if not from your own machine then you need to sniff packets fro the network. I'm using Wireshark for Mac at the moment and its pretty cool. I think sysinternals has similar tools for Windows.
