Where to even apply for VDSL ??

Hi All ,,

Can anyone recommend the best way to actually apply for a 20Mbps VDSL upgrade? I'm asking this mainly to people who have already been upgraded successfully

I have a 10Mbps adsl line which barely syncs at 10Mbps half the time because of the length of my copper loop to the exchange (even though I am only 500m away from the exchange birds-eye). My original cables were stolen 5 years ago and have not been replaced since so they re-routed me a long way around town and have not bothered to restore the optimal service since (Go figure...)

According to the ADSL checker, my area supports 20Mbps VDSL. So how do I actually go about upgrading, then? I would like to know from Telkom if they can restore my line, move it to a closer-situated MSAN, and/or whether it can be converted to VDSL - BUT I have no idea where to begin or who to approach with this request. Apparently Telkom don't want my money after all!? Should I log a fault perhaps and wait for them to contact me? Or move my line to another ISP to manage the upgrade process? Becayse there just seems to be no official avenue for this process with Telkom, and the wait just goes on and on - which is incredibly frustrating now while my deteriorated line now syncs at 8Mbps which is lower than it has synced in years

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but it seems we are otherwise entirely at the mercy of Telkom calling us out of the blue saying "Would you like an upgrade?". That's just not good enough... especially when we see how many users are already on 20/40Mbps, if not Fibre. I can afford 20Mbps and I am situated in a vibrant urban zone on the West Rand in JHB. I would like to benefit from this tech too (which they claim is available in the area) before the year 2050, without cancelling my ADSL line and opting for 8ta mobile. Telkom , are you out there ?? Too busy fixing your logo or parking your vans outside a few Gated Estates, to worry about improved service for the rest of us?

You can call 10210 to try get it upgraded, as for the line and re-routing it, I think the best would be to drop TelkomZA a PM and see if Charl is able to assist with that.
 
TelkomZA here or on twitter/facebook. Much better dealing with Charl and his team.
 
I just called 10210 and went in circles between their "New Orders" "Network Requests" departments. According to them the max supported speed in my area is 10Mbps, but a few weeks ago the ADSL checker confirmed 20Mbps VDSL capability

I've tried messaging TelkomZA with requests in the past but nothing came of it. I'll try again then, I guess...? :/
 
IF the tracker says max speed is 20Mbps then you are most likely not in a VDSL area but connected to a exchange that supports 20Mbps ADSL2+

I think if the checker shows 40Mbps then you are in a VDSL area.

This however does not prevent you from upgrading and you can get Up to 20Mbps adsl2+ service depending on the distance and line stats :)

Does it depend on the modem you're using? If you only have an ADSL router will it still report vdsl speeds?

Was hoping someone would confirm that. :)

Now I just have to wait for Telkom to update the exchange profile online. Right now it says my max speed is 4mb and I'm getting 10…

Remember to request ADSL2+ and not VDSL. If you get a VDSL service you will require a new router.

Vox prices seem good enough for me to dip my toe in the vdsl waters.

If the checker says 20Mbps then it usually means that it would only be adsl2+ but if it says 40Mbps then its VDSL enabled then you should ask for ads2+ or they will install the VDSL profile.

Best way is to pm the TelkomZA rep and he will be able to confirm for you.

Why? :confused:

bwana was cut over to an ISAM on Monday. Confirmed. He can get between 30-35Mbps. :p

Ok well then the tracker will update to show max speed 40Mbps VDSL then. I don't think Telkom will rollout VDSL with max 20Mbps so if the checker say or 10210 or the rep say max 20Mbps then I think its safe to assume 20Mbps adsl2+?

I'd have imagined the same.

Curious to hear if this is how it works or not?
 
Well I'm glad to report that I did at least receive a helpful response from TelkomZA who say they are looking into the issues I have with my line. At least there's some communication and intent....

But, unfortunately it seems that Telkom's social media support aren't really in a position to make any positive impacts 'on the ground' when it comes to matters of A) Telkom's snail-pace infrastructure rollout, or B) their unwillingless to replace a measly 500m cable that was stolen over 5 years ago and has left me and about 10 of my neighbors without adequate Telkom landline service since that incident

My hope was that by communicating that there is still a pressing issue, something proactive could be done, but alas I'm yet to see any real/tangible difference to the performance of my line. Well I've done what I can and my purse is ready for 20Mbps (heck, even 40Mbps). The ball's in Telkom's court now and it's up to them to get their act together so that I can get on with this upgrade. I wonder how long I'll have to wait for that? I must say... Afrihost's mobile offerings are looking mighty attractive right now... makes you wonder how they're going to look in a couple months time...? ;)
 
I've been reading a couple of threads with regards to adsl2+ and vdsl hope some of you clever techies could clear something up for me.

My area
Service Available
Maximum speed available in your area 10Mbps (Copper)
Your Current Service speed 4 Mbps

Now vox is offering 20 Mbps vdsl would I be able to make use of it even with my adsl2+ modem ? I understand I will only get 10 Mbps but its only R342.00 where 10 Mbps adsl2+ is R425.00
Also can I request VDSL to be enabled or is this totally telkom decision where and when it gets implemented ?
