Don't ever get the 8600GT/S, you will kill yourself in shame when you struggle to get decent frame rates on games released four months ago. If you are completely and utterly restricted to that budget and have no way to make R1000 or just can't wait a month or three then get the Radeon; which beats the 8600GTS but still isn't comparable to the might of the 8800GT.

Might be true, but his budget is R1500, no point telling him to get a R2500+ card that is in short supply. The 3850 for R1750 is definitely the best option around his price range.
