Which 9mm ammo do you recommend for EDC?

Guys, can we agree to keep this a safe space? If you know better than others (or think you do), you can just share your opinions and help educate others … laughing at those who have shared their own preferences and opinions isn’t as helpful. If anything we can agree that there’s not a lot of help on ammo or gun selection, which is why these threads are worth a lot to those of us who don’t just want to watch another YouTuber.

This ^

That nonsense is internet gun lore, up there with the R50 AK your buddy's buddy can find for you.

A handgun is still a handgun, doesn't become a magical super canon due to hollow points. And smartybox loads are higher grade baloney.

And the main issue with hollow points and barriers isn't lack of penetration, it's the hollow becoming clogged, and failing to expand.

Some more smart people I see.

Weird that Hollow points are the ammo of choice for self defence. As it does more damage on a target as opposed to a FMJ. It's actually LAW in some countries that you use FMJ in order to try and prevent the perp from dying.

But hey, carry on.
@Foxhound5366 I'm out. Not going to debate with these guys. Better have a chat with a guy at the local gun range. You will get solid advice there ;)

The velocity the bullet travels at, a thing like a branch will render the Hollow point kinda useless due to it expanding before hitting the target. When a FMJ will just go straight through. Same if you are attached as an example and need to shoot through a car door. I actually still have a few Eliminator rounds. But they are dated and should probably be shot out... Those were the SHYTE! Can't find them anymore locally it seems.

Oh Jesus that says it all

You should rather not give ammunition advice, ever.

You get opinion, and you get oft repeated gun lore baloney. Mixed mags, and 'stopping power' is up there with the biggest BS you'll ever find, and when it comes self defense, you really want what works.

Share a few of those laws please?

Remember we are in South Africa...

Do not confuse the kak advice you posted with debate please.

Now stick to 'I'm out'

People like you get others killed because they believe you.

No, this is a serious subject where people should NOT post pub 'advice'.

I for one am not laughing at what he posts, I am calling it out for the bullshit it is.
(and I am not alone)

@Pitbull has posted exactly that, dangerous and stupid advice.

You fortunately still get to choose in the end though.

Yes but you’re missing something important, Blackadder: Pitbull is sharing his beliefs innocently. He isn’t doing it to deliberately spread misinformation. He’s clearly entrusting his personal self-defence to his point of view, just like you and I do, so I’d appreciate if you can share your opinions with due respect for all our chatters. I don’t want a thread where only the most thick-skinned people shout out all others. That’s the rest of MyBB. You can and should phrase your opinions with a measure of respect, and we would still value your opinion and expertise (should you wish to justify your point of view).

Primary reason for hollow points is to prevent over penetration and accidentally shooting the innocent bystander behind your target, with the added benefit of doing more damage to your intended target. It doesn't turn your handgun into a high powered rifle with 'stopping powa' It's still a handgun with not much power at all.

Crap man... If you have a 9mm its already a lung blower... Add in some hollow points and its tank killer... Its all they use in the Ukraine....

Yes I am sure people believe it, but that does not change it into sensible advice.

The advice I provided is based on solid and very well documented research which is freely available, a lot of it done by law enforcement, some by manufacturers and a lot more with people with lots of experience.

If you do one bit of research, research Eliminators and that type of very light, very high velocity ammunition in the context of SD or law enforcement for yourself, there is also a lot of information out there.

They rank in the same space as R.I.P. rounds... go and read up on those too while you are at it.

Solid advice has already been given, your choice in the end.

CBA out.

Speer Gold Dot 124 grain +P has served me well for many years. Excellent for vehicle glass penetration.
That's the one I want, but I've never been able to find in SA. (I live far from anything you can describe as a city)

This may be calling out bs,
1. 'Stopping power' in handgun calibers is a movie myth.
2. To a point. Heavier is often still better. In SD situations very few people are 'precision shooters'.

but this is not.
HP/FMJ/HP/FMJ  nice Smartie box load, you forgot the blank first to just scare them and snake shot second because you do not really want to kill someone.

It would be a lot more effective to down-vote the post you do not agree with or think is bad advice, instead of trying to get personal.

I've got some experience with Hornady Critical Defense in 9mm. They expand really well and show no signs of over penetration. Will definitely recommend.
This stuff? https://safarioutdoor.co.za/shooting/ammo/handgun-ammo/ammo-9mm-luger-115gr-hornady-ftx-cd-25.html

That is expensive by any measure … lowest grain, no +P, and only 25 rounds for R740! And what point are you just paying for marketing?

For that kind of premium, it better do some real voodoo to make it worth it.

Thats the stuff I bought. Put 10 rounds down and the seem to agree with my 19X just fine.

Am keen to shoot a steel target to see the expansion.

Supposedly barrier blind. So should expand just fine after going through windscreens or doors. I've seen some tests, and it appears to do what it says on the box.

It ticks all boxes for good carry ammo, but Holy sheet, that price

For SD, use premium hollow points from reputable manufacturers. Do not mix FMJ's into your SD magazines (ie smartie boxing). Find a brand that works, and stick to it.

If anyone tells you to mix your ammo, you can safely ignore them. Walk away and count yourself lucky.
