Hi Guys,

Telkom finally decided to send someone to install my Telkom line, so now I’m waiting for the ADSL to be activated. What ADSL router would you guys recommend? I have a Linksys WRT54GL upstairs in my office for my pc and printer, and for the wife to access the web using her laptop. Downstairs next to the telephone point is our entertainment centre. I want to connect my Xbox and MCE PC (and PS3/WII in the future) to the ADSL router.

The wireless signal strength is ok downstairs, never had a drop anywhere in die house, but I’m thinking about an ADSL router with WIFI so that the signal strength will be boosted when working downstairs. What router would you guys recommend that will work best with the WRT54GL (flashed with DD-WRT)? I’m thinking about Billion or Netgear, but not sure about which will work best.

Thanx in advance

I have been using a Zyxel router from Telkom for the last 3 months and it hasn't given me a days issues yet. Also has some nice features like VOIP built into it. Plus you get it free on a contract so you don't pay

Billion 7300 or up modems or linksys WAG200 and up modems. Both have really easy to use interfaces and can do the illusive half-bridge mode!

Thanks for the advice guys. Will look into the WAG200. Where would be the best (cheapest :D) place to buy the Billion 7300G or Linksys WAG200?

My 2c worth ...

The Netgear DG834GT is based on the Broadcom 6348 Mips processor which is rated at 255 bogoMips which is probably the fastest processor of the routers that you listed and should offer some speed advantages on processor intensive tasks like torrents etc. It has 4Meg of flash ROM and 16Meg of RAM. The Broadcom chipset also works very well on noisy lines i.e. fewer dropouts and faster stable speeds (something to consider if you have a 4Mbits/s line). This chipset also has the best ADSL diagnostic software available (see http://dmt.mhilfe.de/) which allows you to test your line and to vary certain parameters in the modem like the Tx power to increase your connection speed etc. This is a very popular router in the hacker community and you can download 'improved' fimware like UberGT which offers additional features etc. Digital Planet has a Netgear promotion at the moment where you can get a R100 voucher if you buy a Netgear product.

I'm not sure whether or not the DG834GT supports half bridge mode though - you had better check carefully if you require this feature. If you need this option then a Billion 7300G might be a better choice. This is also a very reliable router.

APPLE Airport Express+Dlink T300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cool:
300Mbps, Gigabit Ethernet, connect harddrive, printer, ADSL modem (Dlink T300), Xbox 360 and others all together wirelessly, I have one with my laptop and would highly recommend it, good signal, it's also future compatible.

So if I get the 7300G and use it in half bridge mode can I still use all the wireless AP functions etc, these aren't disabled?

Good question, would also like to know.

@terencevs
So if I ask for a discount on the 7300G , what would you give me :D
