OK, so my sister wants to get a media player for her non-smart tv :whistling:
She has Telkom 40+40GB Data Package (Month-to-Month), so can change as data requirements increase. No Fibre in area... yet
Will need DSTV Now, Netflix & Showmax, at least for now.
Used mostly evenings from 6pm-10pm, also not for that full 4 hours. Much less.
What would you recommend?

There are only 3 android boxes you should look at in SA.
The xiaomi mibox, the telkom lit or ematic.
The last 2 are essentially the same, just rebranded and backed by the same distributor here in centurion, Nology. but the have an extra usb port and ethernet port over the mibox.

These are the only boxes in SA that are google, netflix and dstv certified. IE you can update to the latest versions of these apps and they should work without issues. They are also running the latest android tv OS and not a skinned android version. They also have built-in chromecast.

Bought an Ematic this week, works perfectly. Netflix & Google certification & ethernet port main reason. Interface looks very similar to that of my Samsung tv's and very easy to setup and use.

Also recently bought an ematic. VEEERRYYY happy..

athough keep in mind with little bit of data she gets its going to EAT it. unless you do bandwidth capping.

hmm ok that Ethernet port has me interested
is it running modern android tvOS?

EDIT: like actual android tvOS and not whatever android OS mygica uses and or used to use
my parents had two of those boxes running some sort of cheap android lollipop os that was not designed for a TV

What do you mean? Setting stream qualities?
yEA... pretty much kinda changes picture quility a bit.. but helps usage.

i also have 40 and 20gig and noticed my data being eaten. so i did medium capping.
Before it was so beautifully clear. now a little more fuzzy

I will recommend ATV Launcher Pro over the standard homescreen. Each app is a nice big tile 4 or 5 per row (or more/less). You can use widgets, but I removed that area.

There are other options too. I don't mind paying for it, since I'm using it every day.

Looks good, gonna give the free version a shot. Thanks

Are these 3 still the recommended boxes to get or has there been new ones released since this post?
