Modems: E1820, E1752, E5331s all Huawei
Router: TPLink WDR3600 (irrelevant - but the 2 modems are used in it)

My current signal strength never gets better than -85dBm on CellC/8ta/MTN. Not using Vodacom.
Would getting this http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=32_35&products_id=95 Antenna Kit help out with any of these modems & signal strength?
Spent all day browsing around the web & don't want to end up buying the wrong thing.

I use a 9dbi omni gsm antenna from CST electronics together with a pigtail from scoop which is connected directly to the mmcx connector on my huawei modem

I had no internet for 18 hours of the day on cellc until I bought the antenna

Is the universal coupler necessary?
Or will the normal connectors work just fine for E1820, E1752?

To be honest with you, I have never used a coupler, so don't know how affective it is. If you are not using a coupler, you will probably need a pigtail. Be aware though that although your huawei modems might have an antenna connector, on some modems the connectors are actually disabled, so will not do anything for your signal strength.

Best to Google your modems and the external connector type to see if it works for that modem

Pigtail links here : http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/index.php?cPath=84_92

Check with uniterm (dbg) also, as mybb members get a discount there.

E1820 connector is disabled, seen it mentioned a few times.
Will be sure to mention mybb discount to kernel when shopping at uniform.

Not exactly disabled, but used only for diversity read channel (not transmitting). Therefore it requires minimal coverage (so tower can hear signal from internal antenna). -85dBm should be fine, you should see some performance improvement with pigtail, but signal indicator will show signal from internal antenna, not external one. You will see this modem is useless for positioning antenna to the tower unless you use inductive coupler. If using pigtail, use E1752 for positioning antenna. Thanks sajunky, will go thru it.

Hi There,
I would suggest you get the Poynting people involved.
Their antennae range is excellent and will be able to advise on the best product to go with.

Hey dude, thread maybe a bit old but anyway...

Try out: http://www.antennas.co.za/Scenario/Select/2

I got bought the "High gain wideband directional Antenna, GSM 900/GSM1800/UMTS/LTE, 694MHz-3GHz". Just put it next to you TV antenna and swivel it around checking your connection speed, I knew the general direction of my closest base station so it helped. My connection jumped from a poor EDGE connection to HSPA+.

Oh and also remember to change you antenna type to 'external' by accessing your 3G Modem via a web browser!

Hope it helps...

Thanks will look into it.

I didn't mount the antenna or anything but did test it on the ground and noticed already -5dBm changed only but I wouldn't advice someone to purchase an antenna unless they living on the edge with 1 bar being displayed.
