I know Afrihost uses IS
Who do Webafrica, Axxess, Cybersmart, etc. etc. use for their uncapped products?

Mweb have their own, as do WebAfrica and Cybersmart. Quite a few people use IS and there are still a few people left who sell SAIX. There are also backbones run by Neology, BCSNet, MTN Business and Vodacom Business that are used by various ISPs.

Hi MyDogHasNoNose I am just a little curious. Why would you need to know which ISP uses which backbone?

He might want to avoid a certain backbone. As an example, I blatantly refuse to use any uncapped account that runs on IS, because the rolling windows and daytime throttling is so crap.

My GOLD IS account is awesome thank you very much. If you get a cheap account. You get cheap service. The ISP's ask IS do do that stuff. It's not IS's fault. Go to Openweb and try a Gold IS account. Much better than the cheap crap other ISPs use.

BTW Afrihost's awesome uncapped that everyone loves is also IS.

I didn't look further but this MAP dates to 2008 but gives an overview of those iSPs that are still in the business.

iSPMAP.org.za

Someone can maybe find and link to a more recent version :).

Well this is last updated in 2009

Although outdated, as mentioned , the concept remains the same.

I did, actually. Less than a week ago. It was totally unusable during office hours. Even international browsing was a major issue. And I wasn't the only one experiencing issues. Plenty of other people were also complaining about crappy performance on the IS backbone in the Openweb thread.

Out of all the backbones available to OW IS is the second least desirable, DSLHeaven being the worst.

Because I want to avoid an IS ISP but they seem pretty common. After Afrihost's issues with their Cape Town IPC and now Openweb's pathetic international speeds of 200k on a 4Mbps line, I am hoping I can settle with a working ISP.

I may have to revert to Mweb who I recently left for cheaper offers. That said, Openweb silver uncapped is MORE EXPENSIVE than Mweb.

+1

1. I have just left Afrihost 1 week after joining - it was pathetic but apparently related to their IPC in Cape Town needing an upgrade. They were at Telkom's mercy for that and I couldn't wait so I went to Openweb...
2. Openweb Silver uncapped to New York and London today:

Add to that that I had been with IS ISP's previously and had issues with inernational. I am sick of IS to be honest.

*Edit* I've just phoned Openweb and they are not aware of an IS issue.

Here is my local speed, clearly the issue is not on my side.

Omg! Don't say that. I'm going to be signing up with them in two weeks time :(

They had major IPC issues in Cape Town but I believe they are now sorted. That said, I'm not convinced IS are up to scratch when compared with Mweb. I'm trying another IS product (openweb silver uncapped) and it's poor for international ATM. :(

Hello

Engineers are busy investigating the matter. Have you seen no improvement?

I have, thanks MrBEEP - I think it's pretty 'normal' now.... I get between 1Mbps and 4Mbps on speedtest.net. I'll let you know what it looks like next week if I have an issue again during a normal working week.

Openweb's capped accounts are THE BEST I have ever used. Even Better than 2 ISP's I have used.

Alas I spoke too soon. Really not sure where the issue lies, but right now my line syncs nicely but pppoe refuses to connect, saying bad user/pass all of a sardine. This happened right after disconnecting to let someone else test using my account. Of course I tried calling and was told to call back in office hours so no inet since yesterday :(
