Which Beemer?

Well, if you can't find a high-powered new 5, maybe have a look at a pre-owned 550i. De-tuned M5 motor. You may even find an M5 for that price...

Each to his own I guess.

From http://www.eurocarblog.com/post/346/top-gear-porsche-boxster-s-vs-bmw-z4m. They are comparing the Z4 M Roadster to the Boxster. But they mention the Z4 roadster beats the Cayman S. So you can imagine how much fun the Z4 M Coupe is.

Top Gear tests the BMW Z4 M and compares it with the Porsche Boxster S. The Z4M costs 5.000 € more than the Boxster S and it has 63 ps more.

The Z4 M is a car that doesn’t coddle the driver: according to Richard Hammond, “you have to grab it by the scruff of the neck and treat it like the beast it is”. He goes on: “and while the Boxster flatters your ego, this [la Z4M] thrills you in the most primeval way … the latest M cars were crammed full of technology … this is Fred Flintsone’s car … It absolutely steals your heart”.

In closing, the track and the Stig: the Z4 M Roadster beats even the Cayman S (compared to which it has a lower price). Now we are really curios about a comparo “Cayman S vs Z4 M Coupè” (which has an even lower price and should be even better on the track). Check out the video of Hammonds’ test.

You agree what...that the porsche is the better car? even though the Z4 costs 20% less?

then I'm sure I can find a car thats better than the cayman, but costs more...and so on...and so on

And the BMW will be worth half what you pay for it in 5 years ... ;)

Call it brand snobbery if you will, but for the same money and in the same class I'd never take a BMW over a Porsche. So Cayenne > X5, Boxster > Z4, Panamera > 7 series etc etc.

The Porches are generally quicker, more efficient and will have better resale value.

Absolutely correct! We have just traded in an immaculate Z3 for R105k on a new Subaru and ours was the highest offer he had after advertising it for a couple of months on the net. Why anyone would want to burn 500k on a BM is totally beyond my comprehension.

Somehow I doubt people buying 'supercars' buy it for its 'good' resale value

Doesnt mean you have money you should waste it...

How is buying a car with a slightly lessor re-sale value - wasting money? By that rationale we should all be driving toyota's :D
IMO the whole concept of buying a car now with the hope of a "max re-sale value" is overated - a vehicle is not an asset I invest money in with the hope of a greater return...for that you might want to consider a lovely van Rijn

I buy a car primarily for the value I can extract from it NOW...TODAY; not 5 or 10 years from now.

So choosing to buy a supercar with questionable resale value 5 years from now is not a waste - its a....'practical' investment :) Not being able to afford one and still buying one is a waste

My dad bought an X3 Xdrive pretty sweet car...

Yes, wife had one - my friends say it makes you (a man) look queer :p

You complained earlier that the BMW is 20% less than the Porsche and implied you'd take it for that reason - so I'm guessing price is a factor?
Don't you buy a car to enjoy it and 'extract value from it today'? :/

show me where I "complained" that the bmw was 20% less and how this would effect my buying decision?

anyway...this is going off topic.

The decision's made -> 335i sedan FTW ! (with the single turbo of course)

I know this a hypotheticcal buying situation not aimed at you - and you never said directly the price of the Porsche and Z4 is an issue. But these comments show it is in this situation because you brought pricing comparisons in the equation :

I would still rather get the Z4 //M over the porsche

You agree what...that the porsche is the better car? even though the Z4 costs 20% less?

But now with these comments, you're saying price shouldn't be an issue and you should buy the car for the value and enjoyment received?

You do want to leave this issue? Anyway now that the topic is concluded, let me indulge you.
I brought 'pricing comparison' into the equation, since someone brought a 'comparison' between 2 different makes into this thread - so what? You cannot make a comparison and ignore price...

But now with these comments, you're saying price shouldn't be an issue and you should buy the car for the value and enjoyment received?

Your interpretation of my comments astounds me.

How do you deduce from... " IMO the whole concept of buying a car now with the hope of a "max re-sale value" is overated - a vehicle is not an asset I invest money in with the hope of a greater return...for that you might want to consider a lovely van Rijn, I buy a car primarily for the value I can extract from it NOW...TODAY; not 5 or 10 years from now." ...that price is not an issue?????
