Which current HSDPA modem is the best?

Having owned the e620 - MTN branded , e170 - MTN branded , e172 - VodaFone branded , all of them Huawei , I recommend the e170/e172
I considered buying an E172 as a compromise to the E272 shortage, but the last E272 was available at Makro and surprisingly Makro said they have never stocked the E172, but the thing that really puts me off of the E172 is a lack of external antenna connectivity.

Purely by chance, I managed to buy an E272 at Makro Woodmead for ZAR1799.00, but it was the very last one, and I broke the seal & opened the box in store to make sure it wasn't one of them pretend E272s that don't have a nipple cover for the external antenna connector and two cradle indents - luckily mine does have all that :). I haven't contacted Poynting yet about a cradle, but I will get around to doing so when I am mobile again

Was not aware of this - will check when I get home. But I see (http://www.infoferenda.eu/index.php...-adapter-for-huawei&catid=hot-stuff&Itemid=22) that even the E220 / E270 / E272 can call take antennas (I have both the E272 and E220 but prefer the E272).

an aside question,... while we're talking about the 'stick' type usb modems...
are they... umh... 'orientation' specific ? (for lack of better description)
What I mean is... u get these USB extender cables, with an attachment at the other end, where a usb item can be inserted, some have a plug on the side, and one on top, so if u plug in a flash drive or stick modem, it will be horisontal or upright, depending on which port u use.
So my question is, ... is it better for these usb stick modems to be put horisontally, or upright for best signal reception... or doesn't it matter at all?

I concur, but it does have a connection for an external antenna. ;)

Ginggs, why do you say that the Novatel MC950D has a connector for an external antenna. The cap that comes off covers the USB connector - I don't see a antenna connector? Are you perhaps confusing this with another modem?

Exactly. Why would Poynting develop an antenna adaptor if the Novatel MC950D has an antenna connector?
Perhaps the cost of the connector on the modem made the adapter prohibitively expensive?

It's a radio, so doesn't it depend on whether the signal is horizontally or vertically polarized?

I seem to remember V3g pointing out once that cell signals are both - horizontal and vertical, or something to that effect - or such that it doesn't matter. In other words, the devices' antenna is not orientation specific.
