I have used a few versions of Ubuntu, AriOS 3.0, Sabayon, Mint 12 and openSuSe. I have had no exposure to other distro's ever.

As I can safely say that my knowledge is slowly maturing, yet still in the league of noobz & novices, are there other Linux distro's that are so much ''better'' that I should spend much time getting acquainted? Or should I stick to Mint instead?

I intend to get a new system with i5 2.6GHz or i7 2.4Ghz, 1TB HDD and 16 GB DDR3-1600. Mecer W25CEV that comes with a docking station. Intel HD4000 shared graphics. As RAM will be abundant, 4GB can drive graphics.
I hope it can drive Mint's Cinnamon?

To be used for VoIP/Video calls, email and office tasks, a bit of photo and video editing but nothing really serious. Over-specified but hopefully I can use it for many years to come.

Suggestions welcome.

Thanks - I wonder if Intel HD400 with Ivy Bridge will be sufficient or whether it will require a discreet graphics chip with 3D?

If it's like Unity then it will be fine. Just ran Ubuntu 13.04 on a hd3000 laptop.

I like Mint, but have you ever tried Peppermint?

So far its the distro I have had the most success with, and their forums are quite helpful as well.

Cinnamon is a beautiful 3D desktop environment and Unity isn't comparable at all. Ten lightyears in between..... :)
