Which DVD Writer?

I got the same problem with the Samsung dvd writer at the office and also my Samsung dvd writer at home and I went for a LG DVD writer and also gave me problems about 6 months when using it, It was a 16 speed drive and when it gave problems the dvd writer would fail discs when I try to write discs at 16x and it could write fine at 8x.

I am now using a 18x ASUS with lightscribe and SATA and it writes fast en works great so far

A IT friend of mine also had alot of problems with Samsung DVD writers and LG DVD writers

I can safely say mercurial, without the slightest hint of lying, that 3 of the Samsung Writemasters, all the same model more or less, non lightscribe have had the problem which the "tray" fails to open.

The one in my main pc jitters my entire box as well, which I hate ;)

It's happened to a number of drives I've had or worked with, not brand specific.

i know of people that have had problems with samsung and lg. personally, the lg gave me more problems - many times it couldn't read discs, saying data cyclic redundancy error. as soon as i put it into another drive, it works. lg a def no-no.

My ASUS was a bit slow, but I bought it in 2005, so the drives probably changed a bit since then. I'll give ASUS another look ;)

Have a samsung cd-writer for 3years now - no problems. so i bought a 16x LG dvdwriter about a year ago. apart from being slow the audio cds it writes nowadays are almost always messed up. my next one will probably be a samsung again...just a thought

Some more LG bashing... my mom had one that lasted about 18 months before it started manufacturing coasters. They have brilliant fridges, washing machines and microwave ovens, but their DVD writers suck.

Be carefull if your getting a sata drive and your a gamer. Some of the gaming copy protection like tages doesn't like sata dvd drives at all. Many gamers on the witcher forums have had countless issues.

Thanks stefan. I'm not a gamer in the sense, so I think I'll stay with PATA. I think MrE is correct when he says it's not brand specific.

Thanks again.

Asush Ligshshcribe, its about R360:

/me is liking it alot

I just phoned a friend for a quote on an Asus drive f4tnom, I'll let you know if I'm taking it ;) Thanks to everyone who reminded me again of Asus.

How about a Pioneer DVD writer? Pioneer are considered to make some of the most reliable DVD writers on the market. They don't usually cost any more than the Chinese ones either. Take a look at www.frontier-electronics.co.za they usually sell them. Look for some reviews on Google to get an idea of the reliability.

LOL..read a review today in a pc mag where the pioneer kicked some ass. Got myself one of these ones though. Haven't put it in my machine yet, as its still in pieces:( (the computer that is)

Here is a link to the forum.
Thinice(Llyod) is a dealer on there. He also owns the site digitalsaonline.co.za.
Will recommend him with ease. Very good service.

Thanks, I saw you post about them recently and I viewed the site when you posted. That's a great price on it, I've bookmarked his site for future reference as well.

I'll be getting an email from my friend tomorrow with his price, then I'll decide where to buy from.

Thanks again ;)

No problem. As with anything his prices arent always 100% on the website, so get a price you like, and ask him to beat it. He is fairly flexible with that ;)

Thanks. Does he allow me to ask for a product he doesn't have on his site too? I'm not a millionaire, so I'm a bit hesitant to ask :p

Get a BenQ, I never had a coaster in 2 years and no problems with the writer itself.

Thanks Stokstert, I think after considering the options I have decided to go with Asus. Reason being, the Asus I used for a few months, which I gave to my dad, looked really cool, worked quietly albeit slow, but I think my dad is still using it 3 years later ;)
