Which Fibre ISP?

My experience with Cool Ideas has been excellent. They phoned me to ask if the fibre is live before the installation team had left through the gate and phoned again a month later just to hear if I'm happy with my internet.

Thanks for the feedback.

Do any of the ISPs lock down their modems to the extent that I won't be able to use my own DNS settings with maybe a static route thrown in here and there?
I think VOX does but there are ways around that, from what I've gathered here.

Supersonic also don't want you fiddling with their routers but I've reset it and it was working although the moment it comes online the password changes to something I don't know.

Had to help the neighbour when his internet wasn't working.

Unfortunately Cool Ideas have priced themselves at the top of the table.

Friend in Durbanville has had excellent service from Vodacom. Also cheaper - 100 mbps for R895,00/m

A neighbour used Supersonic and it was a disaster. She eventually stopped the debit order. She received several threatening emails from Supersonic but ignored them all. They appear to be associated with MTN

I would say go with anyone that gives you the best price and extras, except Telkom and WebAfrica. The rest are pretty much the same. Just search the forum and see how many complain about this supposedly great Cool ideas. I'm with RSAweb and always had fast and good service, but others here have complained about them.

nope we don't - you will have access to the router
We only stipulate that the router admin password should be known to us for support purposes

I also had to decide on an ISP for my Openserve Fibre. Narrowed it down to Cool Ideas and Afrihost.

Sure, Cool ideas is more expensive, but when you look at the two feedback threads for the two ISPs I noticed more issues with Afrihost that were not there (Gallo Manor issues) or were much reduced (like with the recent slow Youtube issue) on Cool Ideas.

I'm pretty forgiving and, even more so, lazy so I'm likely to stick with the same ISP for a long time. I'm not going to start off with the one that charges the most. :)

I had a good experience with Cybersmart when I lived in Cape Town but they throttled torrents when I tried them in JHB (both occasions on ADSL, that is).

Not sure what their fibre is like.

I think they are a CPT-based ISP so depending on where you are they may be worth a look.

I suppose some ISPs may do this, but not usually. We don't.

@bwana Afrihost post installation service is on their App. Any ISP that issues tickets and you can track them on your App is worth looking into. That where the difference is. Otherwise all are similar. About DNS locking stay away from Vox. Afrihost also offer great wide range routers but I have my own mesh setup that was easy to configure. Afrihost gives your the dial in logins and you can manage that yourself. (If you are familiar with the process).

Never had any issues with Telkom on Openserve in 5yrs. Bundle deal you get free mobile data sim, free voice calls to any Telkom land/mobile phone with one bill from one company.

We're getting Openserve fibre in the neighbourhood and so far I've had Vodacom and Telkom knocking on my door wanting to sign me up. Is there much of a difference when it comes to ISPs on the same fibre network or are they pretty much all the same?
I can recommend Websquad

Had openserve here this morning to do the installation but now we have to wait for a contractor to run the conduit, etc. There's a queue of about 35 in front of us. :o
