We're getting Openserve fibre in the neighbourhood and so far I've had Vodacom and Telkom knocking on my door wanting to sign me up. Is there much of a difference when it comes to ISPs on the same fibre network or are they pretty much all the same?

There are some similarities when it comes to fibre. The obvious ones are if the FNO's is down in the area then it doesn't matter what ISP you are on everyone will experience the downtime.

There are some advantages to consider like support, price, type of router offered and each ISP runs their own network so routing might differ between ISP's and one of the biggest being any type of contract or clawback.

You might not consider moving but if something isn't working out for you, you might find yourself stuck in a 12 or 24 month clawback period where you will foot the bill for the installation and activation of the fibre line.

One of my favourite analogies posted on this forum is the pipes and the water one. The FNO is the pipes. Openserve have some good pipes. The ISP is the water. Each ISP has their own flavour (routing, redundancy etc) and does their own bit to make it special for the client. Then think of after sales service and support.

But you're on Openserve - so you can try our different ISP's credentials to see how their internet and support is.

My 2c, anyone with a rep here should be fine. You don't want to deal with WhatsApp support, or an agent when things go south. In my opinion, unless you need some fancy routing, support is the bigger selling point.

Going through WhatsApp support and PMing a rep here is worlds apart.

So basically, Afrihost, Cool Ideas or Websquad to cut the list short as all have active reps here. :)

Been with WebSquad for over a year, there service is phenomenal. Line speed and uptime is excellent but that's a given, depends on many factors like area, fibre provider and ect... Ultimately the choice is yours in the end.

Just do abit research and choose the provider.

Beware of top ISP rankings on this very news site. I am with Supersonic ISP (they laid the fibre in my area and have very few ISP choices). They have the absolute worst customer service, as reflected on their Hellopeter and Google reviews. Let that guide you. It seems they sponsor a lot of features on this site and gain positive coverage through advertorials. A lot of unhappy customers were influenced by this.

If you're in Port Elizabeth or Durban try ZTEL.
We also cover George and Cape Town but have greater foothold in PE and KZN

Thanks for the feedback.

Do any of the ISPs lock down their modems to the extent that I won't be able to use my own DNS settings with maybe a static route thrown in here and there?
