Which free firewall OS to use as load Balancer

Looking to buy one those cheap mini pcs and slap a few extra network cards in it to make it load balancer.

The tplink one from takealot is super slow and capped 100Mbit, but the cpu can hardly handle a 100Mbit.

So thats why want built one with I5 cpu to handle better speeds.

Currently it would need handle 200Mbit to 300Mbit, but if I ever get fibre it would need handle 1000Mbit thoughput also.

So what OS would you recommend I want fast switching to backup internet when loadshedding kicks in?

Sorry, had a browse through the old threads now. It wasn't the Mikrotik, it was Edgerouter X

Openwrt is really really good. I run it on an older TP link I have and it works like a charm. Its as complicated as RouterOS for us common folk tho.
 
You can buy a refurb desktop that is as cheap as chips and then put in a Ethernet adapter and you'll have a cheap rig for x86 running openwrt.

A celeron will probably do 400mbs and the i3 probably over 800mbs and anything more will be full line rate.

Sophos UTM Home Edition might be what you are looking for if you wanted easier to use.

Pretty sure it still supported the load balancing.

But if you don’t have a spare PC and need to spend money quite honestly just buy a Mikrotik.
