What media player do you have?

Did you use the fixer from Sourcefourge?

Other than Frontosa, where else can I get this unit? And what's the average price?

Not sure. No where I would think. Just get it from Frontosa, it's damn cheap.

That said, seems Mede8er are the only ones on the ball about sorting out the compressed header MKVs. Most of the latest MKVs floating around use compressed headers, so only the audio plays on units that can't do compressed headers.

I would expect AC Ryan to be the next ones following suite to sort out the problem.

The problem is that I don't have an account with them. Got the forms months ago but haven't gotten around to getting it done.

but doesn't WD's newest firmware update fix it?

I am sure there was a previous post about it being in the latest update.

Probably. I haven't done any digging, only going by what people have/haven't mentioned on the forum.

So Compro NMC950, Mede8er and probably WD TV are all able to play MKVs now. Great!

Just installed Mede8er version 4 beta 5. Plays the compressed header MKVs, yay.

And wow, the new GUI/menus is out of this world!

I have had the WD HDTV (2nd one now) for over a year and I have never had a mkv that didn't work...from movies to series, etc.

But I will be getting a Mede8er on Monday for the lounge and move the WD to the room with a wifi dongle. Just by reading it seems I should install the beta 5 firmware due to no 5.1

The mede8er will also do duties as a NAS

yeah also been looking at building myself a NAS.

been looking at one for round about R3500 with 2TB storage.

will make centralized viewing/storage so much more effortless.

the one reason though why I would go with a custom NAS is the whole upgrading of space.

most of the media players (with internal hdd) are restricted to certain sized drives.

also the one thing that is annoying me about my WDTV, although I think it might be the drive, is that it takes ages to 'recognize'/load the drive.

If you read the thread again you'll notice AC Ryan has fixed the compressed headers problem MONTHS ago ;)

Well don't want to sound negative but a home media player like these hardly qualifies as a NAS ;) If you want a real NAS you'll need to spend about R2.5K on PC hardware, then you can stock up to 6 hard-drives of any capacity. Preferable at least 3 so you can setup some form of RAID (eg. you won't lose any data if any single disk fails).

As it stands in can probably be done for around R4k then you'd have about 4TB of space (RAID-z/RAID 5 - single drive failure protection) or 6TB of space (RAID 0 - no data protection). Upgradable to 10TB (RAID-z/RAID 5) or 12TB (RAID 0). Also should be upgradeable to larger hard-drive sizes in the future.

I'm getting a Western Digital 2TB NAS for R2 200 (My Book World Edition II). Used to have the Dlink DNS-323, but it is just too expensive for what you get

What are the transfer speeds like if I may ask (copying to and from)? Does it support CIFS/Samba (eg. can you access it VIA Windows Shares/Mount it in Linux)?

yep know that. my post was in response to Pearl's mention of the Mede8er functioning as a NAS and Echo mentioning the building of his own.

the one in the price I mentioned is with only 2 1TB's but the mobo is a bit "high-end" and for now the 2TB is quite fine and as I mentioned the whole thing about your own NAS is the ability to upgrade space.

currently all I would really need would be to have my PC on 24/7 (of which it probably runs now 20/7) and then maybe 1 or 2 more hdd's so that I don't need to share my current drives (with all my stuff on).

also could do with a gigabit system.

working on putting down a network cable to which I will be connecting the WD which is in living room.

this might be frowned upon on the forum, so would prefer the replies to be discussed in PM's...

but have to ask here: for those of you that "acquire" your stuff in HIGH quality and from 1 source and that knows it can work on either PS3 or Xbox360, pls give me a shout

in our house is a PS3 and so would love to get stuff that would be able to work on that so as to not get another media player.
I already have a WDTV on my side as well as a Xbox so I am sorted in terms of playback issues.

fiddled yesterday with the Xbox and learned how to use Media Browser through it, which is pretty neat as it has quite a nice layout.
