Need to replace my current Seagate ST3000DM001. Been looking at this one , but it seems to get mixed reviews. Needs to be in the 2-4 TB range. Any suggestions ? Boot disk is SSD, so I'm sorted there.

Was also toying with the idea of just keeping it external.. have a brand new WD MyCloud 3TB sitting in the cupboard

Yes, but it's use is not limited to just a NAS.. it will run fine as a single drive in your PC.. There are no special features on the red drive that would inhibit usage on a desktop..

I bought two of them from Evetech - about two years ago and about six months ago whenever they had them on special. The one I bought two years ago is used everyday for about 10 hours and has given no problems and all its SMART parameters are still fine. Both are vibration free but they are not the fastest drives - I run the operating system from an SSD.

Currently on Evetech for more than takealot:

I tend to buy things such as an hdd from places where I can collect it in person - I do not trust deliveries to handle a 3.5" hdd with care...
