Which ISP should I choose?

You know I was looking at EA's Webstie and noticed that you could purchase and download games via EA link.Right? If you are a normal user with a 2 GB cap how on earth are you supose to download games? like BF2142
Thats just not right I'd stay away leave it to the first world countries with a 30 GB cap.See for yourself http://battlefield.ea.com/battlefield/bf/

Over a period of a three or four months ;)

hehe, seriously... yeah, these services and many others, Direct2Drive on either FilePlanet or Gamespot, cant remember which... and Valves Steam application are all examples of producsts aimed at countries without hectic restrictions on their broadband services like South Africa has from Telkom.

TelkomInternet - SAIX Reseller

2GB (4GB hard capped) - R149 (Advanced)

Is this definite? I'm pondering getting do closer 2 but it'll only make sense if I'll actually get 4GB and not be cut off at 2 or 3.

Cheers

You should get 4GB or so but obviously there are no guarantees, you might get more or less.

There are no official guarantees, however 4GB is the mark that was set by the (Unofficial) Telkom Rep on the forums.

The system apparently cap your 3GB account when it notices you have exceeded 6GB. This is at least the time beings rule set.

These rules can change at anytime without notice as Telkom has done in the past.

I applied for an ADSL contract at telkom 5 months ago. (Yeah they still havn't done annything yet). But I never even knew of the self-install option. The only reason I went with the contract was to safe on installation costs and get a free modem. I'm going to cancel the application tomorrow and reapply for month-to-month and install the ADSL myself.
I still need to get a rental line. I just want to make sure they wont charge me the ADSL installation if they come to install the phone line.
Thanks for the great info MrG!

Okay I do have a stupid question about WebAfrica.

Does the 10GB SAIX cap for R490 also act on a prepaid system? Meaning, do you pay R490 once-off and you use the 10GB over the next, lets say, 5 months without paying anything until the cap is reached? And then you can just buy another 10GB for the next 5 or so months?

Or do you have to pay a monthly R490, regarding if you have any cap remaining or not?

If the first one is true, and someone only uses about 2 to 3GB a month, doesn't it work out cheaper just to get a 10GB once-off? Seeing that R490/10GB = R49 per GB, insted of the R70 per GB.

You can slap me if I'm being an idiot. ;)

hey empie, sorry for the delayed response. I am currently in Port Elizabeth for the week with no access to a computer, only my Nokia N95 :) Quick answers to your questions. no, the 10GB account runs month to month with no carry over. Also telkon might charge you for the adsl installation if they have to come onto your premises to also do the phone line. They should not but it has been known to happen in the part. Best thing is to get written statements from them at a telkon shop and keep them to it.

Thanks a mil MrG!

Is it worth having a local account as well if you're really into downloading?

If thats the case, I was thinking about the following configuration:

Phone Line = R99.95
384kbps Line = R152.00 (From 1 August...unless Telkom is taking us for a ride again)
WebAfrica 30GB Local IS = R130.00
WebAfrica 1GB SAIX Top-Up = R70.00 (And just add more if I really need to download international)

Total = R452.00

I'm not sure how rich local servers are with stuff to download.

The phone line element increases to R111.90 from 1 August (unless Telkom decides to be generous  )

So they are decrease the ADSL line but increasing the phone line...
Isn't that kinda stupid? They give us some hope just so they can milk us with something else. Bah...
Phone lines should be free!

Anyways, before i turn into another ranting anti-hellkomist...

Local only is only really useful for Local Torrents (which ain't that great), and IS News Servers.

People have no issues downloading 30GB from the News Servers lol :)

That above configuration does seem good, however check the 3GB Cybersmart if you have not already for a 384kbps line. R130is for 3GB. If you only want 1GB then its fine.

I am looking for a service with Static IP for our servers. I don't want to pay the Earth. Any suggestions. I am not up to date with these things.
I tried to find out what Diginet costs these days but after 3 calls to Telkom and the run around every time I gave up. Seems they do not have anybody there who knows anything about Diginet. maybe they discontinued it but it still appears on their web site.
Anyway, I just need a service with reasonable cost. We have a 4G ADSL line now. Would appreciate some advice.

MrG this thread has been an invaluable resource when looking at options for our small office wanting to change ISPs as well as getting a new line.

I did notice one major omission though.

I think mention should be made of the ADSL one-price packages being offered by many ISPs that enable paying the ADSL line rental to the ISP directly.

Most of these offer price savings as well as the benefit of less contact with Telkom and should be a consideration for anyone who doesn't yet have an ADSL line (for existing peeps thats a different story).

Perhaps its not included as its still a fairly new product and some ISP's don't yet have the option.

As an aside can anyone tell me why WebAfrica's line rental is the same as Telkom's yet other ISP's like Axxess charge lower line rentals eg. Axxess = R289 for 512 line while WA and Telkom = R362 per month, thats quite a bit more expensive eh?

I have been using Cybersmart for a while now and have refered all my friends and they are all very satisfied, their rates are definetly the lowest in the 3 gig cap range and their one-price options are the best.
384/128kbs circuit plus 1 GIG CAP R169
384/128kbs circuit plus 3 GIG CAP R259
512/256kbs circuit plus 3 GIG CAP R429
4096/384kbs circuit plus 3 GIG CAP R524

I would agree with Paxron, if you require 3GB Cap (International), then the one price service with Cybersmart is indeed a very good option.

The only concern is if Cybersmart decides to inforce their 1 account per line rule, they have more control over your account (the line aswell). If you wanted to use a ISDSL 30GB Local account aswell, you dont want to worry about being cut-off for breach of service agreement.

Else the Cybersmart option is one of the best choices at the moment. I will include the one price service into the main post as soon as possible, also AWA Diginet lines are still available and Telkom should be the best place to go for information regarding those services.

If you are looking for a static IP address I am not currently aware of another services besides the Uncapped ISDSL accounts. I am hoping someone can correct me, because if I am right then your options are not only very limited in the ADSL space but also expensive.

Give OpenWeb or WebAfrica a call to ask them for a quote on an account with your requirements, however depending on usage and speed requirement Diginet could help, but that is still extremely expensive.

As said before regarding the One Price Service, I will update the original post with more information regarding the one price option from each provider, and I am glad that the post was useful to you deekay and thank you for your recommendation.

Most expensive ISP on IS ?!

Check out this image (http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=977&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent) and tell me with a R50 setup fee and at R102.35 per month for 1GB int + "up to 10 GB" local on IS that this is not the most expensive package on IS

Openweb has it for R89 per month, SAGateway at R70 per month, GamCo at R75 per month (with each offering different things like GamCo gives you 10MB webspace etc); plus none of the latter charge a setup fee :)

EDIT: Openweb has the cheapest packages (out of Openweb, GamCo, Webafrica, and SAGateway) from 3GB+27GB and up (IE as well as 5GB+25GB etc). Gam has the same price as them for 3GB+27GB.

With all these, price is not always all that matters, you fill in the blanks for waht you are looking for in an ISP :)
