Which ISP should I choose?

What package to choose

Hi Guys

Can anyone give me some info get on the net.

1)Wireless vs ADSL (why)
2)ISP (who and why?)
3)Package to choose?
4)what speed is best 192,384 or 512?
5)3Gig usage ok for a month?

I have a laptop at home and use my cellphone to get online, which is to expensive cause it costs R2 per meg which is ridicoulis i think.

It has a built in wireless card.

Will appreciate your input chaps.

Why not wireless? Because I said so.
Why ADSL? Because it's better than Wireless

But what I need to know first is:
1)What do you use your internet for? How often?
2)How much MB (average) do you use a month?

1)Wireless vs ADSL (why)
Unless you're gaming, wireless is supposedly slightly faster (and more expensive). For gaming, SAIX is recommended.

2)ISP (who and why?)

Cybersmart and Sainet are about the cheapest, with the fewest extra features. WebAfrica and Axxess are rated highly for average prices and great service. I've been with Sainet for 3 months with zero complaints at all.

3)Package to choose?

I prefer not going on 24-month contract, thanks. Things are changing for our broadband and I'd like to be able to change too. For ADSL, Telkom's Self-Install Option will save you R400

4)what speed is best 192,384 or 512?

384's the lowest you can get now (I believe) and it's fine for basic home-use. If you have money to splurge, go for 512 or 4Mb.

5)3Gig usage ok for a month?

Not really, but one manages. I'm a gamer and occasional downloader (mostly Linux packages though) and we're 2 people using the same connection. We have to be disciplined, since even looking at DeviantArt can run up your day's usage.

10Gb would be nice and 20Gb would be dandy.

If you are a serious series collector, then it's worth getting a 2Gb international plus 20Gb local-only package. This starts becoming a little complicated, since all surfing (local too) is taken from the 2Gb first, often leaving you in the middle of the month with no international access.

Ummm... HSDPA is faster than 384K and 512K. Occasionally, iBurst also outperforms those.

So, I think wireless is supposedly faster, yes.

HSDPA is faster yes and it's almost 3.6Mbps :D already! But at R0.19/MB to R2/MB? No thank you.

Ok, to be fair, I was thinking about WiFi Wireless internet at one of those WISP's. My 384K ADSL beats the 512K WiFi I get to use sometimes - Hands down.

Thanks for the response guys.

I will be using it daily for email, browsing the net, download music, programs, utils, games maybe?

I think the 384 line sounds fine for me as it is reasonable speed for an entry level. I would prefer going on a pay as you go system, not too be bogged down on a 24 month contract when better packages and Neotel on its way.

So it will be between Web africa, Cybersmart,Saix, Uunet and Iburst.

Which 1 is the best option for me on a 384 line on pay as you go and using bout 3-6gig per month. I'm new to this.

I still need to have a line installed, which will obviously take time to install for my ADSL line. What is the best price for me in paying 1 lumb sum = ADSL line, free modem, once off activation, time waiting for installation.

Awaiting your response

;)

The free modem is only available for 24-month contracts, if I'm not mistaken. Telkom offered it on the "Self Install Option" too, but that ended in August.

Note, many ISP's don't demand a contract and allow a "month-to-month" basis. These are slightly cheaper than prepaid, but once the cap is used, you're generally stuffed. Axxess's prepaid does cost more per Gb, but allows you to carry over an left-over cap (up to some limit), to the following month.

I'm not worried about paying for a modem.

1)Whats the price now to install an ADSL line at home.
2)Which is a good modem to get for 384 line and how much does it cost.
3)Whats the best option for me then?

ADSL vs Wireless

ADSL is better than wireless in my opinion as wireless is a shared medium and can be affected by various enviromental factors. If you are looking for mobility then wireless is a definate yes, else based purely on price and speed ADSL is the way to go. I cannot see how anyone can compare
0.06c/MB with ADSL vs anything up to R2/Mb on wireless technology

Hi guys,

First for me on this forum, need your expert opinion on selecting a corporate ISP.

Can anyone provide me with your opinion using DataPro as an ISP, their pricing we received from them are far more superior compared to other competitors in the market.

1. How is their service??
2. Is their Data centers well managed???

I have been looking at the following to maximise our internet speeds and transportation of mail;

- I am looking at a 1Mbps uncapped AdSL which we will use for web traffic.
- 256 Diginet 2-1 contention ratio that will only be used for mail traffic and in future synchronizations to offsite servers.
- Web hosting.
- An ironport device, bandwidth manager and juniper firewall to complete the solution.

Lastly backed up with a SLA.

I need your expert opinion if DataPro is a viable option compared to other players in the market

ADSL is better if you are not on the move. Its also cheaper. Between 384k and 512k? 384k is probably better value for money of you just gonna browse and download and the speed difference is only about 10k. However, if you gonna upload get a 512k as the upload is double at 256k compared to 128k.

ISP? WebAfrica! You can do a lot yourself on their cotrol panel. You can buy bandwidth online, even buy topups and pay-as-you-go accounts that do not expire at the end of the month.

Mail & Internet

What is the reason for using a 265k Diginet line ? to send mail ? We used to use one but at 18-21k a month for international bandwidth and only 256kbps it isnt worth it.

Consider this a 256kb Line is capable of doing aroung 66Gb of traffic in each direction a month (25KB x 60 secs x 60 minutes x 24 hrs x 30 days) so a max of around 155Gb of traffic is capable of being sent across it. So in any 1 month you can only send that amount of traffic across it and you pay R18000.00 for it.

However a 4Mb line is R426.00 for the line rental and 155Gb x R75.00 - R11625.00 for the same traffic so you save yourself around R7500.00 a month. Throw in a second adsl line and add local only onto it and cut your bill down even further. If you need help regarding this send me a pm;) Im sure we can help you out and offer you a great service.

Hi Keith,

The 256 Diginet line is no where close to 18,000k a month. No where close to 10,000k either.

I am not a big fan of ADSL especially when one has stringent internal SLA's.

In my view i think Diginet is more reliable than ADSL i could be wrong, however, the pricing for Diginet has decreased because of stiff competition from the ADSL market.

If one has to compare contention ratios i believe ADSL is something like 50-1 or 1-50 whereas Diginet is 1-1, 1-2,1-3 ect...

I think today mail is more important than having a telephone... I am just a little sceptical using ADSL for mail.. unless you can convince me otherwise?

For me i have a lovely SLA where downtime for mail should not exceed 30min is ADSL a option then??

Regards

Hi there, I see there hasn't been a post since last year so I hope someone will answer this ;-)

I'm currently on a 512k 3G account at Telkom ISP(I think it's the R259 one) and looking to switch to the Closer Plan 5 (which I think includes the 4mbps line??) as suggested earlier in this thread.

I use the Net quite often and need a faster connection as I require fast refresh rates as I do work on a stock trading - type basis. I assume the quicker line (4m) should give me quicker response. I also like to download movies and TV series via Azureus every now and then.

Without the downloads my usage is about 1G a month and with it I reach Telkom's 6G hard cap but I don't do much more so I don't need more than the Telkom 3Gig soft cap.

So my questions are:

1. Is going for a Telkom Closer plan (Option 5) the best option (providing Telkom still provides soft capping - I don't know coz I haven't been downloading for a while) or is there something else anyone can recommend?

2. Maybe a bit off-topic but the last time I was downloading torrents I got a problem with my puter's registry files and had to re-install Windows coz my puter wouldn't start. I think it might have been a virus in one of my torrent files??? Wat do you think it was and how can I rectify/prevent this from happening again when I download torrents next?

Thanks for any help in advance

Hi,

My suggestion is if you take telkoms closerplan 5 it includes a 4mb line, which is cheaper than any ISP can give you.. it might only be a few Rands but still.

Unshaped gives the international side no preference as to which protocol is prioritized like shaped does, so its ideal for gaming and your share program. However my question is where is your share program connecting to ? local or international..

I would recommend going onto an adsl account that is upgradable or switchable between shaped / unshaped, then you can add on at any point when your cap is reached. if you are interested we offer adsl accounts like this.

Your torrents question, most peer to peer file sharing programs have loads of fake virused files, my suggestion is get a decent antivirus that scans peer to peer programs. Take a look at our site as we offer this too. www.hostworx.co.za

Is Virgin mobile prepaid still the best way to go for low usage GPRS (only email and limited web browsing) ?
The user is on dialup at present, but I have a old GPRS capable phone which I can pass on.

I would say so Yes. At 50c/MB, it's perfect for low usage. The speeds should be a bit better than Dialup - but not always - All depends on network congestion.

Beleive me the network is sometimes slower that the very first internet connection
