Those still working and using mapbooks mostly know which roads work best.
Easy enough if you're used to it, for me I like a plan of the route in my head.

My advice to people fairly new to navigation apps is to begin using it on your known routes, e.g., going to work, driving back home, going to the mall etc.

That way you will learn to understand the instructions given. Many people get confused with some of the instructions and then get lost, blaming the Garmin or whatever navigation app you are using on your phone. For example, when you are instructed to "Exit left, then keep right." "Bear left, then exit right." some of these instructions at first can be quite confusing to a novice. There are many other examples as well.

Continue using your preferred navigation app until you are familiar with and understand the navigation instructions given.

Google maps.

Years ago was tomtom or garmin but they both ended up being a disappointment.
Then I used Here from beta stage to full for a while till I discovered how terrible it really is when I ran it side by side with google maps for a while.
Trip from PTA to Toti, Here: 12 hours, maps: 7.
Trip from PTA to Pilanesburg, Here: 6 hours, maps, 2.

Did waze for a while as well but google maps is just so much better.

Waze, not sure why but Waze is oddly more accurate than Google maps with expected times etc.
