which one? ps3, wii or xbox360

I'll post this one loud and large so everyone call fully absorb it:
(link already posted)
* February 8th, 2007
* 600,000 PS3s
* Virtua Fighter 5 Copies Sold: 30,000

* December 29th, 2005
* 80,000 Xbox 360s
* Dead or Alive 4 Copies Sold: 60,000

In English, that means, that in Japan, DOA on 360 had an attach rate 15x higher than the equivalent, highly rated PS3 game on the PS3. Which suggests that people are buying it to be a BR player first and a Game console second, which is devastating news for Sony, because PS3 subsidies are covered by game sales. That's why every major publisher is jumping ship to 360.

So forget your "maybe's" and your "potentials" and your "OMGSonyhavemybabies!!"

That's hard numbers. PS3 is sucking.

DarkWater : The problem being, esp for "next-gen" content... the good stuff will come to the consoles with the highest sales figures as it is less of a risk to develop for that system. The PS3 currently requires a fairly high percentage of its install base to BUY a game for the game to even break even... whereas with the 360 and the Wii, that percentage is considerably less and therefore less of a risk for the developer.

The PS3 currently is being bought as doobiwan said, primarily as a BR player, which is bad news for Sony and for Developers.

There are lots of reasons why MS or Nintendo may win this round of the console wars, and why it MIGHT just sink Sony or at least hurt them in a very very big way. Of course, this is all conjecture atm since they're all fairly new systems. We will know more conclusively in about 2 years I think... but I would be surprised to see Sony anywhere near the position that they were in with the PS1/PS2....

Wow this one is still going on.....

Just to recap my opinion.

The 360 won last year for obvious reasons
This year I think the 360 will still have a bigger install base but the Wii will be close and the PS3 will be lagging.
Next year the sales rate of the Wii will lag and the PS3 will improve dramatically. The 360 will sell about 8m every year onwards from now.

By 2009 the PS3 will catch the 360 in sales and then in 2010 the new Xbox will be released which will cause the Xbox sales to shoot pas the PS3 which Sony has said they won't be replacing for 10 years. By 2011 it will be old technology and will lose ground terribly until Sony release the PS4 in 2013...

So could the Sony guys give some sales expectations here?

The Japs really really don't like the Xbox do they :D

The PS3 is slightly outselling the PS2 and the Wii is wiping the floor with the PS3... At a rate of 3.5:1....

So as nationalistic as the japs are they prefer the Wii big time.....

Keep in mind the stock shortage of the PS3 units on the shelf

DarkWater : but sony themselves are claiming that there is no stock shortage anymore.... so please explain that?

I think Sony lost out to the Christmas shopping list last year, but i still standby Sony PS3 sales to rocket past Xbox this year, just my prediction.

So you think they lost out do you... the fact that the planet knows they lost out horrifically doesn't hold much sway I see :D...

Nice prediction anyway though..:rolleyes:

My advice, make a list of the games you want to play now, and in the near future. Buy the console that supports the largest number of those games.

PS3 price will come down, but probably not for at least a year.

Pointless as the 360 v PS3 religious debate is, let me add my 2c worth. I currently have an XBox 360. If the PS3 develops a good selection of games that I want and cannot get on the 360 then I will buy it later. But the way things are going I don't see that happening. XBox will have more exclusives (and XBox / PC shared titles) for at least another year.

Due to it's late launch, the PS3 has lots of catching up to do. Sony has also made some gambles on technology which may or may not pay off (Cell processor / Blue Ray etc.). The thing is, the PS3 has the potential to not only catch up, but surpass the 360. (1) Technically a later generation machine, (2) Massive legacy fanbase, (3) Massive Brand Name awareness, (4) Rabid Japanese Nationalism. They are going to have to focus on the Japanese / Korean market which is undoubtedly their strength.

I do not believe that anyone will "Win" this race. I suspect that the PS3 will outsell the 360 over their lifespans, but not by that much. XBox will be the top seller in western markets and PS3 will win in Eastern markets. Microsoft will make more money from the 360 than Sony will from the PS3 (Not just games, Live subscriptions, Digital Downloads, IPTV etc.). 360 Replacement will be years earlier than PS3. (around 2010 compared to 2015).

WII will sell more than either of them, have a shorter lifespan and make less money.

NO WAY PS3 FTW N00BZERLSFIH.... Or something like that :D

Seriously though I agree with you completely, except I can't see the PS3 only being renewed in 2015.. They can't lose money for that long.. They are planning on it but I think they will be forced to replace it earlier else they run the risk of really losing a lot of ground to M$...

I agree with GE on all but two points . . .

. . . the PS3 has the potential to not only catch up, but surpass the 360. (1) Technically a later generation machine . . .

The PS3 was suppossed to launch the same time as the 360, but due to production issues with the BR drive/lasers they had to keep pushing it back till yields were high enough, and standardization issues had been sorted out for BR.

Ps3 tech is, in reality, a year older than the 360. The graphics core of the PS3 is the NV47 otherwise known as the geforce 7800 GTX, released in 2005. The Xenos core of the 360 is based on the ATI R600, which is a modern unified micro architecture that is yet to be released for the PC.

The cells power is also questionable. The SPU's can only do specific things not generalized calculations like AI or game logic. In addition, 2 of 7 are dedicated to the OS. can 5 aenimic, memory starved vector processors compete with 2 cores (4 threads) of fully funtional CPU? Time will tell, but even so, no matter how fast the Cell is, that GPU is a severe bottleneck.

WII will sell more than either of them, have a shorter lifespan and make less money.

I believe Nintendo's going to with this one in raw money terms as well. Maybe only under "gaming". the 360's video marketplace may also give it an edge.

WII will sell more than either of them, have a shorter lifespan and make less money.

Wii has/is/will sell more and probably have a shorter life span, but not so sure about making less money. Sony and Microsoft take a huge knock on each of their consoles with a view to making it up on software sales. The size of the knock has an effect on software prices. Thats why people paying through the nose for software on PS3's. Nintendo make a profit on each console and the price of software on the Wii is the same as software on the Gamecube.

Sony are looking long term to the PS3, probably over five years at the very least because, IF (BIG IF) they sell software as they forecast, this is about when the PS3 will start amking them money.

The cost of development of the Wii is a fractionof that of teh PS3 and Xbox. Nintendo usually brings out a console every five years. What do you think is going to happen when in five years time, Nintendo bring out a new machine, a suped up Wii (maybe about the same in power as the PS3 or amybe more powerul, the technology havnig grown cheaper) with added features which includes a brand new, mind bogling innovation. If anyone can do that, Nintendo can, as they have just proven. What will this do to Sony PS3 console and software sales? Nintendo can afford for the Wii to have a short lifespan because the costs of development. IMO Nintendo are already seeing cream from the Wii and revised its profit forecast positively, Sony however issued a profit warning. At $250 gamers can also afford for it to have a five year lifespan. In fact if Nintendo brought out a new machine in three years time, I think that would be fine.

The problem with Sony is that their cost of development is/was too high so software is goign to be expensive. If I ever bothered to get a PS3 i can tell you that at $80 a pop...I would NOT EVER buy a game. Like I have been saying all along, Sony have completely Fcuked eth cat on this one. My personal long term forecast for SOny is bleak. Even if they sell the consoles, they probably wont sell software at the present price point. IMO it would be more prudent for them to give price cuts on the software rather than the console. If not, then the incentive to pirate games is too high. without software sales, Sony will not see a decent ROI!!

Keep in mind the stock shortage of the PS3 units on the shelf

If you read the right articles you will see that people are saying that PS3's sit on shelves much longer than the Wii and that while you can find a few second hand Wii's if you look hard enough, its quite easy to find a second hand Greystation 3

Lol, I love it. Both consoles haven't been out for 6 months and already they're making predictions over their longevity.

People where making predictions about it before they where released. It's common sense.

Your latest gfx card for your PC has a life span of what 2 years? Maybe 3... It needs to be thought about before handing over so much cash.

The Xbox 360 seems to have a life span of about 5 years... so in 2010-2011 the new one should be coming out.

Is that worth R3699. Yeah

Sony has stated that they expect a 10 year life span on their console so is it worth double the price? Maybe..

But what happens when the next Xbox comes out in 2010 and makes the PS3 look like a PS1... These are things that need to be thought about if you can only afford one platform...

Regardless of what happens in the next 3 years, I'll put money down that the PS3 will not last 10 years. I don't think it'll even make 6.

(before a replacement is launched, not availability)
