which one? ps3, wii or xbox360

Sony has stated that they expect a 10 year life span on their console so is it worth double the price?

I think Sony hasnt got a hope in hell of the PS3 lasting ten years. Both other console producers will most definately come out with newer consoles way eb fore then. To not at least be close on their heels would may not be good business. I say may because look how well the PS2 has been selling recently.

Whether or not this will spell suicide will depend on the nature of the new consoles. This about what would have happened if the Wii came out and the PS3 didnt. The PS3 is not selling that well, but it still keeps Sony in the game. Also, as much as I would like to deny it, when the PS3 price drops to the right level there will be massive uptake and sales could even overtake that of the Wii. This will however only probably happen towards the middle of the PS3 lifespan when the price REALLY drops. I think the market has clearly demonstrated that the PS3 price point is too high.

IMO with the PS4 sony will take a more cautious route and not cram the console with expensive high end features. At least I think they should, IMO graphics have reached saturation point anyways.

I think the consoles are pretty much as powerful now as they need to be...

What Sony need to do now is catch up with their online abilities and then start improving on physics engines. I agree that the gfx are reaching a peak.

Once you hit reality there is nowhere to go... Same as CPU's that really haven't made that much difference for the last few years.

 my wii arrived today from hong kong - idiot marks it as 1000$ meaning hk dollars but doesnt write hk just 1000$ so customs assume its 1000 usd - did i get hammered  :(

furnic : you should fight with customs... they should be smart enough to know that HK's currency is $ as well and is on a totally different exchange rate to US$.... unless of course someone is pocketing the diff...

doobiwan hold on a little. RSX isn't that far behind the Xenos if at all.
In a closed box system you can do things with RSX that you couldn't on the PC with 7800. Remember Xbox is in a DirectX environment, which the RSX isn't.
The Xenos has a maximum 48 in flight pixel threads at any single time, compared to the 24 of the RSX. However note that the Xenos is a single issue GPU while the RSX is dual issue. So in an ideal case RSX can also put out results from 48 processed pixels. While I'm not a fan of the limited 128-bit bus used on the RSX and 8 render outputs instead of 16 like on the 7800. The target resolution for consoles is not like that of PC's. on Console you're only ever dealing with 480/576/720 and 1080. With a bandwidth of over 24GB/sec for the RSX it's more than capable of sustaining the required 30 or so fps at all those target resolutions.

Also what the Xenos doesn't have that the RSX has is the ability to share graphics load with the host CPU. Since Cell has vector processors and graphics are vector based, you can off load geometric data to Cell to process. It can maybe even process some of the vector instructions then pas them on to the vertex units of RSX for further tessellation or any other vertex operation.

So for total system power, it's much of a much between the two :) While the Xenos has massive bandwidth, it's EDRAM which also contains back buffer can only do AA at the low resolutions, but scale to 720 and 1080 it becomes just like the RSX only instead it is limited by the 10Mib of space available for the GPU.

Having said that PS3 is likely to pick up sales, because of it's Blu-ray finctionality. As it stands blu-ray players are out selling HD players and what cheaper way to get a BD than buying a PS3?

Sony is out they minds though to think PS3 will last into 2012. While it is 5years, they were late so they may not have that luxury

HK$1000 is about R900  That's almost four times less than the going price here, I should order one too!

wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii... i thnk

thats what most ppl are saying.. i trust the judgment of the population:D

DUDE!!!!! You have my DEEPEST sympathies......Surely you have an invoice. If not try and get one from the retailer. Unfortuanetly the process will probably be one where you have to pay if you wnat your **** and then query it afterwards.

I suggest you go and see your bank manager and arrange for a bond to be registered over your Wii....that way you will be able to pay the cutoms

AFAIK there are more HD DVD stand alone players sold than Blu-Ray players. It's only if you include the PS3 does Blu-Ray get a lead.

now does that mean people are buying the PS3 as a blu-ray player. If so that is bad news for Sony.

Or if they are buying it as a games machine you can't really count it as part of the war....

Wii has/is/will sell more and probably have a shorter life span, but not so sure about making less money. Sony and Microsoft take a huge knock on each of their consoles with a view to making it up on software sales. The size of the knock has an effect on software prices.
Agreed, except for the fact that Microsoft don't just make money from the Game sales. They also have the Live services selling everything that can be downloaded, including Video (Movies, TV etc). Also they are about to do some big stuff with IPTV. Or so they say. Nintendo will make more money selling their units, but Microsoft has a lot more ways to make moey from the 360.

Agreed...I was mainly slagging Sony. Also I dont htink Microsoft take that big a nkock on thier consoles.

Nintendo have the virtual arcade thing happening, but I'm not so sure that it will be a HUGE money spinner. Would like to see the sales figured for that. Pretty sure they are making money from it but I dont think it will be nearly as much as Microsoft will be making off the 360's multimedia functionality once thats in full swing.

I have the Wii not I just need the 360 and the HD tv

AFAIK... rumour has it that MS are now not taking a knock on the consoles anymore..... which is why there is talk of a price drop in the not too distant future.

360 Replacement will be years earlier than PS3. (around 2010 compared to 2015).

WII will sell more than either of them, have a shorter lifespan and make less money.

Sony has hit their head quite hard the first time around....don't think they'll let that happen again.....

WII currently has huge success due to it's price, nintendo exclusive titles and controllers/remote...but after people had fun smashing their tv sets and playing the Wii games they will soon start to crave the true power of a next gen console ..aka 360/PS3/Dreamcast 2 :p ....and by that time the PS3 will be cheap enough to make a jump for...

Checking on www.BestBuy.com I counted 18 available titles.

18 compared to 200+... I wonder which one has the biggest next gen catalogue?

Thats funny, i saw at least 60 games there? Look, debate all ya want- the Ps3 is gonna be released here next month and its steadily and methodically gonna tear a Black hole through the sales of its competitors. ive loved the playstation ever since i got my first one in 96 and inserted ultimate doom.I love competition amongst the platforms so i hope the Xbox doesnt end up like the Sega Dreamcast- but hey, who knows

Ps3, all the way:cool:

Lol the Xbox already has an installed base of > 10 million. I don't think it's going the dreamcast route.

I also did say 18 available games which means I am not counting the coming soon ones.

The PS3 has had 2 games released since it launched. Sonic the Hedgehog (wooo) and Virtua Fighter 6 (Tomorrow I think)...

The rest where launch titles. Now if you think that is good enough then go right ahead. Personally I am going to wait until it is as cheap if not cheaper than the Xbox 360. The only thing it offers me over the 360 is Blu-Ray which I couldn't care less about.

EDIT: Okay I found the list of launch titles.
Bold are retail games
Red are exclusives
The others are small down loadable games.

Yeees, well lets see the PS3, the console currently LESS in demand that the SNES or N64 on Amazon (40 places behind the 360 or Wii) http://kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/ps3-not-so-hot-on-amazoncom-237656.php
Going to destroy all. IBIWISI.

Do not confuse the PS2's past catalogue with the PS3's. Sony is in K@K. Microsoft has spent a fortune (and has a much bigger warchest) on pulling over content and publishers and for at least the next two years the 360 smokes the PS3 every which way including Sunday, with more and better content. Don't come with the "it's got potential bull either." Sony tried that one with the PS2 as well and time proved they were talking bollocks.

that still aint stopped me from drooling over the ps3 previews in those nag mags, man that mgs4 looks sweet, never mind assasins creed!:D

What exactly is there to drool over? The price tag? The wonky controller?

Uh, well lets see, Assassins Creed is coming to the 360 as well, and the likelyhood of MGS4 on the 360 are getting strionger every day. Konami are definitely considering it (They'd actually like to recover costs :p) More evidence of so here:

http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2007/02/19/survey-would-you-like-mgs4-on-360/
They're already surveying folks about it.

The only other noteworthy PS3 exclusive is Final fantasy, and even that is looking less influential with things like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Bioshock and Mass Effect.
