Morning, after doing some research and speaking to a few people, I am now torn between which processor to go for. My choices are either the new Ivy Bridge Core i5 processor or the AMD A8-3870K 3.0GHz HD6550D FM1 Quad Core Llano APU.

Any advice from the forum will be greatly appeciated.

Sorry forgot to add, the Ivy Bridge processor would be: Intel Core i5 3450 Processor - 3.10GHz 6MB Cache Socket 1155

Depends what you're gonna use the PC for.

The PC is one I am building for my parents to use. I want something that will last for a while so wanting to get a fast processor ect, but looking at the test results, it seems the Core i5 trumps the AMD A8...

If it's for parents get the AMD. They'll most likely be want to Install sims on it and the intel onboard graphics card won't really cope while the AMD will handle it with ease.

Unless they plan on doing folding@home the AMD will be the better choice.

Yeah thanks Qwikslver I think I have decided on the specs I am going for:

A8-3870K with GPU , Quad-core , 3.0Ghz

Asus F1A75-V Evo - all-in-one FM1 motherboard

Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3N9K2/8G , 2x 4Gb kit ddr3-1333

Coolermaster RC-310-SWN1 , Elite 310 , black with Silver

Coolermaster RS-460-PCAR eXtreme power 460w

Asus EAH6670/Di/1GD3 (Still can't decide between the Asus EAH6670/Di/1GD3 or SAPPHIRE PCI-E HD6570 2G DDR3 - what you recommend)?

What you think?

You make two assumptions: First that they'd load an outdated game, second that they're running higher res.

Intel SB/IB CPU onboard graphics do well at lower resolutions.

By all means, if the AMD works out a fair amount cheaper, then it's probably wiser, since it's doubtful that your parents would unleash the full potential of the Core i5 (my assumption ;)).

Not a great PSU, rather get the Corsair VX450 / CX430.

The CPU has onboard graphics, you'd only need to look at a dedicated graphics card for gaming.

Yeah thats what my concern was that they wouldn't really use the Core i5 to its full potential. The dedicated Graphics card is something I want to add now incase later on it is needed.

The PC is going to be used for light gaming sucj as Sims ect but also for photo editing, and movies ect. I am going to want to run the PC at full 1920x1080 res.

Best to get a dedicated graphics card then if they're wanting to game at good settings at 1920x1080. Don't know how much it'll benefit photo editing and movies. HDx670 have always been a good bang for buck option at the low-mid end.

Yeah OK cool. So out of those two graphics cards, which would you recommend? And with the rest of the build, you think that will suffice?

6670, Sapphire or Asus (2yr vs 3yr warranty). Yep, what's the saving opposed to the Intel route?

The Core i5 is fast but doesn't have Hypertheading, just spend a little bit more money and get a i7.

We have i5 at work and it is fast as hell, also has 20GB of RAM and 250GB SSD. :D

Dude. It's for the guys parents. I'm sure an i3 would even be ok.
