It is, but there are ways to deal with the pain.

Checkers: They can type in your card number
Woolies: You can bring up the card in the app and scan that
PnP: You can scan a QR code in the app

There are also apps which can let you load up all the cards so you just need on app (most of the time).

At both my Checkers and Shoprite, my card is scanned, even my OK card is scanned. At some places like Spar and OK, when I don't have my card with me, I can issue them with my cellular number. I hardly go to the shops, usually purchase online, but I have both an OK and Spar within walking distance, as well as a PnP, but I am not big on PnP.
 
I use Checkers-Clicks-eBucks.

I also use PnP-Dischem-BP-Vitality.

I carry around ten cards with me on the daily. Nine now, because I just noticed this UltraLiquor card that has never benefitted me.
 
I use most of the rewards programmes, hell even R5 off is something these days.

My only "concern" with the Spar system though is that its so heavily reliant on your cell number. If I actually cared to, I could harvest hundreds of number from Spar customers on a daily basis by just recording audio in the till line.
 
P&P - good
Checkers / Shoprite - okay
Spar - found it a waste of time and threw the barcode away, but I think they then improved it.
 
I didn’t even know Spar had a rewards programme. I asked at my Spar some years ago and they told me there was nothing.

Doesn't work with Checkers since the person behind the till has to manually key in 16 digits whilst you hold up the line behind you...

Sometimes.
Sometimes they have to punch it in manually, takes a bit longer, but rather that than carry the cards around depends on the shop and branch
 
None.. they all just a pain in the ass when the tannie in front is holding up the whole queue because she can't find the card in her handbag.. I just check which shop has the lowest prices and go there..
 
I was hoping to get rid of the physical loyalty cards and just use in-app virtual loyalty cards, the problem with that is these apps require mobile data (I don't trust in-store wifi and only some supermarkets have wifi).

So the problem arises when I get to the till and I'm waving my phone around in the air trying to get signal to get the virtual loyalty card to appear, sometimes I've run out of data (I mostly use trusted wifi these days), the next hurdle is getting a virtual loyalty card to scan at the till and remembering to turn off auto rotate.

What about just saving screenshots of all the cards instead
 
Checkers Xtra Savings: why is it that only some Checkers supermarket stores allow you to scan you card whilst most others insist that you swipe the physical card? Maybe it's just tellers that are not properly trained and don't know how to do it?

Woolworths: useless vouchers rubbish that you have to actively redeem at the till. Checkers Xtra Savings does a much better job by just automagically applying the discounts (no messing about trying to scan stupid vouchers from the Woolworths app). Woolworths needs to catch a wake up.

Pick n Pay's QR code in-app scan is nice.

I use Checkers, but you have to check very careful that the discount or the extra "free" is applied. Numerous times I seen that the price is even more at the till and not the price on the shelf and then the discount is not even applied.

Had to complain about this many times. I wonder how many people they take for fools before someone actually reports it. Then I wonder if they actually fix the issue or carry on charging people more for the items if they do not also report it? So when they scan items now at checkers I memorize the prices and report it straight away at the till.

On several occasions I've been told that "they forgot to remove the promotion price at the shelf", and I hate to say this but it's best to pull a Karen at that point (or take one shopping with you, although they get very distracted very quickly and you end up spending a lot more on things you never knew you needed).
