Hi guys,
so my Telkom router seems to be packing up now(after +-2.5 years)... so now comes the question on which router to get. Nothing to pricey but I dont want ***.

What I need from it:
-At least 4 Ethernet ports
-Wifi(med-long range)
-good reliability

I have a Netgear Wifi USB Stick for my study computer so maybe Netgear would be the way to go so I can optimize speeds?

Thanks

No! I reckon they are crap routers.

+1, netgear got wifi router = died in less than 6mnths, got a netgear wifi usb adapter = died in less than 6mnths and a netgear powerline adapter = died in 1yr.
Belkin G+ router = still alive for +2yr, Belkin N+ router = still alive +6mnths, Dlink PCI adapter = +3yrs still alive.

Have a look at the D-Link DSL-2740U. Draft n wireless with 4-port switch. We only use D-Link networking products at home, and they work quite well (unfortunately I do not know whether the same is true for their wireless products). Not too expensive either.

I have 2 netgear dg834g's and the combined range is less than a linksys wrt54g... :( My wrt wireless died after about 2 years though.
Dlink and belkin are pretty good.

Only now? Youre lucky. Anyway Netgear is fine, mine gave me good service but Billion or Linksys WRT54GL seems to be the product to beat.
Best to get router with WiFi features. The best way to be future proof.

I probably didn't help the wrt54g (version 2 so long before the L but basically the same) by flashing almost every firmware on it etc :p

I'd get a billion that's on the dd-wrt compatibility list probably...

Hi,
thanks guys... I did some googling on Linksys WRT54GL and it says it does not have a modem which I need... anyone know if it does actually have one?

Billion routers get my vote, have had my Billion 7300G for about 1.5 years now, no problems whatsoever.

:)

No, it doesn't have a modem. You'll have to get a separate modem. I prefer this setup. If the modem dies, your network is still up.

I would advice that you go with the Billion. All Billion wireless routers can cover a wireless range of 100 meters on a line of sight. If it is a Telkom contract i would choose the 400G which has 4 LAN port and stable wireless. If you planning to use VoIP calls then I ould suggest that you go for the Billion 800VGT.

You can purchase the Billion 7300GRA which is the cheapest wireless Billion routers and it has an excellent wireless range.

official billion router fan

Just a big thank you to those who recommended the billion routers in this thread. I've been on ADSL since the beginning and originally had a Marconi modem (anyone remember the green/blue limpit mine?); then two netgear routers (first one got zapped by lightning).

After reading this thread and having endless disconnect problems with netgear as well as problems with p2p on many connections (apparently a know issue with netgear), I got me a billion router last week.

What a breath of fresh air! Brilliant router. Been connected solid for a week with not one disconnect (previous routers would drop the line several times / day), rock solid and stable and works brilliantly on p2p.
