I am looking for a SATA BD drive, preferably with Lightscribe. I an get an LG for about R2K. Are they any good? What other drive can the LG be compared to?

Also would like to know if its is possible to watch a blu-ray movie on a PC. I suppose it may not be possible because of DRM and the Hollywood Hillbillies.

So you're only looking for a Blu-Ray reader/DVD writer then?

For Blu-Ray reader - LG GGC-H20L
For Blu-Ray writer - LG GGW-H20L

The LG is your best bet in terms of quality and price. AFAIK is that none of the current BD drives support Lightscribe writting.

You will be able to watch the BDs on your PC, it would be foolish not to have the advantage of doing so. Just post your current PC specs and I can see if your rig can handle the HD content.

I have both the drives mentioned above and they work fine, they are Panasonic Chipset based if videohelp.com is to be trusted.

To watch bluray movies on your pc legally, Your gfx card and monitor both need to to support HDCP, otherwise it defaults to sd resolution.

Lightscribe isn't popular and most shops don't think a lot about it. Apparently it's very slow and the results are mediocre. I wouldn't confine yourself to a drive with it.

Even with a cheap ROM costing about R2,500, have you seen the insane price of BR discs? It's totally nuts.

Try Cyberdyne for media - not exactly cheap @ R70 for 2X and R82 for 4X (25GB discs), but the best prices I've seen locally.

You need an HDCP (right version) capable video card.
You need an HDCP monitor.
You need an HDCP capable player - WinDVD or PowerDVD.
(HDCP implementations are sometimes faulty or incorrect version so may not work even if box says "HDCP certified").

LG is probably the cheapest on the market, or prolly only one easily available in SA.

You can get around the hassles of HDCP (and region coding) by usinG AnyDVDHD or DVD RegionFree HD.
These programs are not officially or legally supported by the makers of PowerDVD and WinDVD.

These programs will cost you almost R1000. Thank Hollywood greed and SONY's appeasement and conflict of interest (Sony Pictures Corp.).

To go around the issue of no HDCP capable TV, HDFury may be used. It's also another $250 purchase. Thank the same people again.
