Which smartphone apps do you use the most?

How do you reckon where you are posting the above from is in any way better than a smart phone?

WhatsApp, phone, camera, browser.

A few others are there for occasional use such as Discovery, FNB, SnapScan. But they aren't really daily drivers.

I could probably function pretty well without a smartphone, I'd just need to carry an old-fashioned compact camera with me.

He's got an expensive iPhone, it makes economic sense to get as much utility out of it as possible ;-)

But he's right - Apple is much better with keeping your data private than Android / Google. The former makes their money by selling you their own expensive gadgets. The latter makes money by selling you to whoever wants your data.

I'm curious, how does Waze "support" motorcycles exactly?

It differentiates between cars and motorcycles and therefore offers different routes based on the statistics of each.

Other crown sourced maps are actually compromised and in accurate because of motorcycles registering as cars in their systems.

A route for a car isn’t necessarily good for a bike and vice versa.

Interesting. I wonder if they just feed data into a neural network, or if they actually have some parameters of what makes for a good bike route.

I believe it’s just a case of the bike statistics getting grouped together so that it compensates for the differences in average speed due to lane splitting etc and then pumps out the best routes used by other bikes etc.

As always the more people use it the better.

On Garmin bike GPS side you can choose “better” routes as ones that have more curves and technicalities so as to make for nicer rides, instead of just the fastest ones.

I’ve noticed that Google Maps has tracked when I’m motorcycling but still doesn’t offer the option to navigate according to that.

They all need to start supporting cycling/commuting.

Google constantly tells me it can't find a route by bicycle from Kempton to Sandton.

I was in Boston a couple of months ago and bicycle directions are supported there. I think it's just by region.

In Boston there's explicit bike lanes, and when the bikes share space with cars, all parties actually tend to follow the rules, so cycling is quite safe.

Here in ZA, it's kind of "at your own risk" and Google might not want to accept liability for that. For cycling, I typically use walking directions, they mostly work.
