Which SUV to choose?

Like someone else mentioned, maybe if starting a family you don't need a car with a top speed of 250km/h that runs 0-100km/h in 6.5 secs. You're just putting yourself, and other road users, at risk.

That said, Volvo is bringing out a new model, XC40, this year although that might push your budget a tad. My wife's got the Mitsubishi ASX at the moment, that's a pretty sweet machine too.

Dumping a known solid car for another car and more money makes even less sense.

Avoid the service costs (in two years) by spending much more on a new car. Sense it does not make.

Changing to a completely different style of car I can at least understand, but then in real terms it doesn’t really offer any more for this family business.

Yeah except that he wants to swop the toy/entertainment for a shopping trolley.

If it was the other way around I would be right with you.

Also as said above the ago old “but my motorplan is running out” and then spending many many times as much on a new car makes even less sense.
 
Just keep the gti until baby arrives. If you really can't manage after a few months then change the car then.

Keep the golf.
Any small or meduim SUV will just be a downgrade and you'll be disappointed. The have the same amount of space than your golf and will be hevier and slower.

Was looking to replace my 2012 4Tuner, then read this thread. Brought back some fond memories of the 2.2 diesel CR-V we drove before that. Went to the local dealer, had a test drive in the Elegance. Got offered a real good trade in and a very good deal on the entry level Comfort line. Needless to say, there's nothing in that price range (and way above it) that can fit our golf bags without putting seats down :D Even the Elegance at R477k is a stunning buy. Yes , it's not a GTi ... live with it :)

Many happy miles dude, I adore my CR-V. I'll get another one in a heartbeat - space is incredible for the size!
 
Was considering a SUV too - then saw the boot on Q3, Tiguan, etc. - decided that my Passat is just fine with a bigger boot and perhaps more practical. Bulky car seat goes fine and front seat is still usable. Only want an SUV so I guess I can be higher.
 
PS, The new passats come with a built in child car seat. Think it could be optional but a brilliant idea. Not suitable for OP, new future Baba and their dog

Without going into detail about personal finance decisions... My car is paid off as I drive 100Km per day to work and back, no sense in spending money on a nicer car, I just keep it well maintained. We keep her car current as she is only 8KM from work and we drive it on the weekends. Will never buy a brand new car... didnt buy the GTI new as well. She can sell the GTI now and the loss will only be 10K so thats good in my books.

Back to the car decision... so we test drove the Hyundai Tucson Elite 7speed DCT... aaaannnd nope.. Dont like it at all, very sluggish gearbox and insane turbo lag, also the interior is hard plastics everywhere.

After driving the Tucson we went to VW and drove the Tiguan 2.0TSI highline... What a car.. the difference is staggering, and the deals from VW basically placed a new Tiguan more or less the same as a new Tucson.

We are going to keep the GTI for another year until we can find a good deal on a used Tiguan 2.0TSI
