Hi Guys

Looking for some advice.

My girl decided it's time to get rid of her Mk7 GTI as she only has 2 years motorplan left.

We are planning to start a family in a year or 2 so looking at a SUV to replace the GTI.

The thing is moving from a GTI to a SUV is going to be a big downgrade in terms of speed and sportiness so she is really worried about that.

We haven't test driven anything but I am planning some test drives for Feb when we are on leave.

The only option I can think of at the moment is the Hyundai Tucson 1.6TGDI DCT Elite.

Got some power and a DCT box and goes for about R420-440K used.

Any other suggestions?

Must be automatic.

Cheers.

Not sure what your budget is. Something like an SQ5 will have all the sportiness you want but at a price.

Nothing wrong with a golf when starting a family. If twins then sure, but initially it’s fine.

FWIW my wife had a Tiguan with the first and with the second it’s a touareg. 3rd is on the way now and the touareg will still be fine.

I’ve never understood why south Africans are so afraid of out of motorplan cars, and esp in two years time, it’s actually laughable no offense. My scirocco is on 200000km and is just as it was when it was on 1km.

So the budget we have is about R450K max, but would like to go lower than this, dont like debt, especially car debt.

The reason for the SUV is we have a border collie and she is dropped at the parents house every morning so baby seat in the back + the border collie will not work :crylaugh: Suv will have space in the back for the dog, baby seat on the back seats :D

I totally agree with you on the motorplan, but having a performace vehicle such as the GTI without a motorplan is just too risky for me and my nerves lol.

Performance vehicle? There is no difference between a GTI and a corolla despite dual clutch and turbo if maintained properly per what Ze Germans say. Skimp and be cheap on the oil selection and intervals and it will break.

Again, my scirocco is on original turbo and DSG because it's been maintained properly.

OP, look at the A4 station wagon. You can get more space than an suv, and the same drive as the sedan.

I've got a 5 year old 130 000km MK6 GTI. Never given a days problem. It's out of warranty too. It still works for me with 1 car seat, but no dog.

Ignoring budget, I would go with a 2.o TSI Tiguan in R Line trim. Will be a close experience to her MK7 GTI since its the same motor. And it is gorgeous. With your budget though you are going to get fast and new in the same SUV.

Love the R-Line Tiguan but it's ridiculously overpriced. The 1.6 Turbo Hyundai has about 135Kw I think, should be enough power, Im just not too sure about the Tucson.... :|

If you want peformance as well as an SUV try the Mercedes GLA and if you want GTI performance as well as room, go for the Mercedes B Class. Both of these cars can be bought second hand at prices that fall within your budget. Since Mercedes has a 6 years maintenance plan which pays for everything except tyres, even a 2 year old car still has 4 years of carefree driving left.

Don’t even try the GLA, that thing is smaller than a GTI inside . It’s not an SUV . Rather go Tiguan, CX-5 diesel or Ford firebox aka Kuga

Yeah, just remember that Hyundai's 135kw is not the same as VW's. VW kw quoted is usually normally pretty close to at the wheel kw, whereas your eastern manufacturers are fly wheel kw, subject to drive train losses.

And you can't compare the differences in how each car will put the available power down to the road.

I also would love the new Tiguan, but wallet says no.

Merc B class is Merc's answer to the Honda Jazz imo. Middle aged housewife car

Agreed on that front.

You're are gonna be disappointed with the Tuscon if you want the sportiness, the Tuscon is not exciting to drive.
Second hand used BMW X3, Audi Q3 or BMW X1. Or the Mazda CX-5 has a more sportier feel than the Tuscon.

Renault has big trade in deals on the Kadjar. McCarthy in Woodmead had a R80,000 trade in assist special and I think it's still going.
