Whisk(e)y Lovers thread(II)

Looked at those since launch - never pulled the trigger - keen to hear your thoughts when you crack it.

Wife and I had a dram earlier and we both really enjoyed it. My wife even tried one with the suggested soda and mint which she also loved. She is more of a long drinker anyway but I avoided tasting the monstrosity

So I found this deliciously smooth. Nose was sweet and floral with a peppermint edge. We both got toffee with the taste, I got some marshmallow and wife detected coffee. Overall quite fruity though. Finish was quite short but I guess to be expected.

Overall a very enjoyable, smooth dram which I’ll struggle not to finish in a very short period of time. Especially those annoying 700ml bottles.

Edit: having another one and catching quite a bit of pepper.

Yes, all the editions are quite different. The 2016, my favourite, had whisky from every active distillery on Islay. I'm not a fan of the 2018. I had the 2019 edition recently and that was quite a treat as well.
Thanks!

Yeah although I'm like 90% sure it's mostly Caol Ila, when you taste more Caol Ila you start to realize how much of a chameleon Islay Caol Ila is. I actually prefer it to Ardbeg 10, it's a great peated whisky.
Buy more alcohol, you're saying? Don't mind if I do!

I've been eyeing the Checkers release Caol Ila. It seems rather young, but I guess islay malts are better around that age? I wonder how it is?

Checkers liquor shop online has the Glenlivet 18 for R999.

Add this R2 glass for free shipping.

Still miffed I missed out on that 8 (if only for the high ABV). The 9YO is still quite considerably my favourite Three Ships release so far. Let's see what the grandpa (21yo?) will bring this month when it finally releases.

That checkers Caol Ila sounds interesting but seems overpriced, would also be keen to hear opinions

Isnt Liquorshop free delivery over R450?

For Western Cape and Gauteng. It's R1000 for the rest of us pissants.

Anyone recommend it? Seems good price but I keep reading it's a little "thin"?

The 9yo is excellent. One of my favourites. Definitely a big Pedro Ximénez cask fan.

The 8yo is fun trying to find the sweet spot by adding water.

I think the PBC (checkers) caol ila is an absolute cracker. The red wine casks have certainly left their Mark but the peat (and young peat is the best peat folks) shines through. It's a lovely affair providing you like a wine finish. It's a less complicated port Charlotte MRC / PAC.

It's actually a good price for what it is. Those fancy Château Lafite Rothschild barrels aren't cheap

Thanks for the feedback, that's why I just said seems overpriced but I don't know. Also got that feeling as it is still available

Agree on the casks, sure those aren't cheap haha

New arrival.

Interesting fact about the new Compass Box Experimental Grain Whisky.

1645873203017.png

Compass Box have built this experimental blend around a parcel of Whisky from Loch Lomond Distillery made from peated barley, distilled in a copper Coffey still. This blended grain also contains whiskies from North British, Cameronbridge, and Compass Box’s Hedonism Blended Grain Whisky.

An appetising aroma of contrasts: banana and toffee mingle with soft, savoury barbecue smokiness and hints of rum and raspberry. Enjoy a soft and oily palate of almond and vanilla before a curiously delicious flavour of burnt pine cones develops.

Wink wink :)

Tasted the Loch lomond peated grain tonight and I'm not a fan. Everything else in the lineup was good but I couldn't even finish the sample
