I recently grabbed a 1L 15yr Bains in Duty Free. Opened it last night due to some good news and I must say that it is fantastic!

The smell alone is enough with that matured barrel aroma.

I highly recommend it.

I actually bought this on a recommendation at a meeting I attended...I don't think it's very good. The only thing worse is probably Akashi Red (and Bells) in my opinion. But it's just an opinion, if you like it so be it! There really are good low priced whiskies out there though! =)

Had some of this over the weekend and thought it surprisingly good. Definitely passable, if not exactly my first choice.

Guy at the liquor store said almost his VAT69 customers are buying this now. I actually bought it to make Irish coffee :D

I quite like the Loch lomond range. Single malt should tick your R400 limit for a "cheapie". Their grain whisky is also very good as is the signature. Reserve is a little rough around the edges.

So...speaking of cheapies, I picked up the Loch Lomond Single Grain (R280 at checkers) and it's really very good, a very light whisky but with citrus/pineapple notes. At 46% it's a bit alcohol forward on the nose but I don't notice it on the palate much. So I owe morkhans one haha ;D. It's a malted barley whisky produced using column stills so it's 'single grain'. It really punches in the Glenfiddich/Glenlivet 12 range quite easily, I was very surprised. Goes well with a little Ardbeg 10 too haha.

They've arrived... \o/

Help me decide.

Zurich duty free section is a bit meh. I already have most of the interesting travel retails which are available there which interest me. I've narrowed it down to the following:

Ardbeg An Oa - because 1L for R1k is a win and it's top 3 fave dram for me
Lagavulin 10 - sounds interesting
Caol Ila 12 - not sure, seems to be a base Caol Ila
Left field choice - JW Blender's Batch Bourbon Cask and Rye (this is the cheapest and I have the other blender's batch so this will complete the collection)

edit - leaning towards the An Oa...

Yep. Go with what you know in that case. I went for the Laphroig Four Oak last month and was quite disappointed.
