Initial impressions for Kilkerran heavily peated batch 2 are wow! Firstly the mouth feel is super rich and oily and the finish is long. Nose is interesting initially got raisens and sweet peat. Palate is creamy, custard cream biscuits, apple and well peat. Comes across to me as somewhere closer to Port Charlotte / Octomore rather than Longrow (not that longrow is far off from those). I'm sure it will change as the bottle gets some air. For the price of under R900 an absolutely amazing deal. If they ever do release a 100% sherried heavily peated that thing will be insane!

This drinks quite easily, had to compare to Springbank 9 local barley and this is just plain old better all round to me but not really 'funky' (yet?). Will have to play with water on the weekend

You've redeemed this thread. I think I'll come back now.

Am I the only one who thinks Springbank 10 YO is totally overrated? I found it pretty bland, almost comparable to Auchentoshan American Oak, tasting like an underage whisky and I almost couldn't believe it held the 10 YO statement.

I heard it was delicious when you had it with some Coke afterwards.

We had an evening of the Springbank 10 with the Highland Park 10 and the Four Roses Small Batch.
Springbank was a far third in our (admittedly novice) opinions.
I'm less concerned about the age statement and more concerned about the pricing, which was double the other 2 whiskies and definitely not as good in terms of tasting.
That said, compared to my personal undrinkable whisky (Famous Grouse), it's fine.

Yeah I was also most bummed about the price. I think it's overrated, overpriced and I'm not a fan. For the money, I'd much rather buy an Uigeadial or An OA, or something like Glenmorangie Nectar if you want something sweeter.

I agree with you. When I went to wild about whisky and tasted octomore, corryvrekan, sazarac rye and the springbank 10 (specifically because of all the hype). The Springbank was the biggest let down, its not bad its just not amazing for its price wouldnt be buying a bottle anytime soon

I agree. With any Campbeltown whisky, you need to go for the "funky" stuff. Springbank, for me, must be in the cask strength or single cask range to make my skirt blow up

I much prefer Longrow, Kilkerran and Glen Scotia.

Perfect for work:

I picked up a litre of Johnnie Walker Islay in Dubai yesterday. The whole range were on special with 20-33% off so worked out about R550 for a litre.

At that price it's worth a bash.

Some very mixed reviews on the net...

Tasting notes:

Johnnie Walker Black Label Origin Islay 12 Year Old

Blend of Islay malts with Caol Ila as the base, some Lagavulin in here too.
Aged in refill casks.

Nose: Iodine, toffee, orange, you’d swear there was some sherry here though apparently there isn’t.

Palate: In the mouth it’s peppery with dried fruit, fresh red fruits and honey, with the smoke lingering but not dominating. Meaty and full.

Finish: Smoke and a little toffee.

My thought exactly. I enjoy black and double black so I was quite keen on this. I’ll crack open later this evening and have a dram or two.

Interesting, I've not had the American Oak but I've had the 12yo and the Three wood, the 12 is pretty average but I like the three wood for its sherry finishes.

Springbank can vary a lot so might depend on what batch it was as they do practically everything 'by hand'. I recently compared quite a few whiskies including Springbank 10 and it had the most flavour for me. That said the price is verging on ridiculous and the same can be said for Craigellachie 13 and to a lesser degree Aultmore 12. Springbank is generally quite a palate heavy whisky, it's quite oily too. It's quite hard for me to see it as being on par with a R300 whisky but I'll agree the price isn't worth it. To be honest the best choices are generally to buy Kilkerran 12 (similar but more well rounded) or pay a bit more and get the 12CS.

I can understand the bourbon doing well, due to virgin oak and Rye. Packed with flavour. HP 10 is quite a mild thin pleasant peat introduction whisky, probably has a bit more prominent peat flavour though.again unlikely that I'll buy another Springbank 10 due to the price but I do love the brand.
