Very expensive, but very collectable.

That Port Ellen one is probably around R 6 999 locally? The Glenury Royal, who some claim is the better blend. is available for R 4 024.99 here:

The problem is there is probably a "tablespoon" of Port Ellen in that blend...the rest is a blend with grain whiskies from closed Carsebridge and Caledonian distilleries, as well as rare malts from Mortlach, Dailuaine, Cragganmore, Blair Athol and Oban.

That being said I would love to taste that...and compare it to some of the limited release Compass Box monsters.

The blending of grain and malt has become a true art-form and the results are mostly spectacular.

You need to get a bottle of this to diversify from all the three ships/Bains you posted the other day. Or were u just posting the three ships/Bains collection on its own?
I certainly do, only have few other bottles of non JSD whisky. Trying to find some whiskies I enjoy, especially want to try some Islay whiskies. Going to The Whisky Library today to do some tastings.

I'm still fairly early in my whisky journey

I think you mean you prefer bourbon over Scotch or Irish. Personally I would rather have a Three Ships 5 year old which is a lot cheaper, or Jameson’s, Chivas or Monkey Shoulder which you can get in the same price bracket.

I’ve not got a lot of experience with bourbon but I do have a bottle of Jack and Buffalo Trace in the house that I use for cocktails. Bourbon always reminds me of bazooka joe chewing gum, and is probably why I’ve always referred to it as “children’s whiskey”.

But each to their own. I just prefer the real stuff ;)
1st time in the history of mankind where bourbon is called childs stuff. When I taste scotch I taste the grass from the highlands. Bourbon does have a sweetness to it but can be described as honey, vanilla, toffee etc. Bourbon is more flavourful than scotch. I have never heard of bourbon using scotch casks or techniques but it seems the in thing is for scotch makers to use bourbon casks to get the extra special flavours. Try the 3Ships bourbon, much better than the 5 year 3Ships.

Bourbon is definitely not "child's stuff", but then again that is not what @Spizz said at all.

No it simply is not... not even close. Bourbon is vanilla, oak and caramel....Whisky and Whiskey covers basically those three and then ALL the other flavors on the planet. And we haven't even started on peated Whisky yet.

That is because they're not allowed to, by State Law....and also, where would a "scotch cask" come from?

but it seems the in thing is for scotch makers to use bourbon casks to get the extra special flavours.

Yes, they definitely are. Bourbon barrels do add great flavors (started purely by accident) and there is unlimited supply too of course. But more and more European Oak barrels are being used for spiciness and of course for 100's of years Sherry Barrels/butts from Spain were and are used in huge amounts.

Middleton Distillery from Ireland has been growing their own oak forests as an initiative to re-kindle (see what I did there) the massive oak forrests that used to be on that island. They have already bottled one of their Whiskeys that was in a barrel made from one of their own trees.

Also more and more redwine barrels are being used from Spain, France, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, making incredible Whisky. Bourbon barrels have not been the only choice for many, many years now.

Never thought of Bourbon vs. Scottish as a competition lol. Pretty sure most people here love both

I did enjoy the 3 Ships bourbon, but as dualmeister says, if you can find it and I live out of town.

But hey, as MQ says, I’m not saying bourbon is child’s stuff, far from it. Just that it reminds me of Bazooka Joe chewing gum and as a confirmed Scotch drinker the sweetness and scent is very noticeable and very different. The children’s whiskey reference is just tongue in cheek.

I used to really enjoy a bourbon, normally Jack with a few ice cubes, but haven’t had for ages. When the ice starts to melt as you get down the glass, it becomes so nice and smooth and slips down so nicely. I’ll make a point of sipping a few this weekend, as I said I’ve got Jack and Buffallo Trace in the cupboard.

Jack is not bourbon. Try the Trace again and compare with a R300 scotch. The Trace is also difficult to get but more available than 3Ships bourbon.

At last you got something correct... ;)

I don't drink R300 "scotch"...whatever that may be....so what do you suggest I should compare with Trace?
