Whats cheap for you? I'm on Scottish Leader now, they go for R119 (also Banting). Sometimes I get myself Grants (got it on special a few times for under R120)
Black and white also good with water, see they R99 at Makro ow.

And once a year I'll indulge myself with a Glenmorangie.

I'm guessing not more than about R160. Not sure of whiskey prices. Will put those on the list, thanks.

For R160 I'd suggest Grants or Johnny Red.
I'm a little biased towards Scotch there might some others that's good too.

I need a cheap drinkable whiskey to drink on the rocks or with some water.

I'm traditionally a beer and brandy type of oke.

Where do I start?

#nojudging :D

VAT 69 is imho the cheapest best quality whisky at about R110 a bottle iirc. Otherwise if you want to spend a bit more, J&B is a nice 'light' whisky and good for a n00b to get into the ways.

I don't think J&B and Bells are going to be very good at drinking neat is it? Tried it before and tastes like Spizz without the S :p

Want something with flavour. Maybe my budget is unrealistic?

I pretty much drink any whisky neat and I'd definitely say that J&B is perfect for drinking neat or even with ice because it is quite light and a tad sweet.

three shpis bourbon cask is quite drinkable neat IMHO

I know :(
Wife is pregnant, so as long as she can't drink, I don't drink (my choice). Been "on the wagon" for the last 3, nearly 4 months.
Would have loved to have gone though.

Still going strong, but counting down the days when I can taste that sweet nectar again!

You say light, I say flavourless... but what do I know :D

I'll try it out in the pub ;)

You know nothing Fan Snow. J&B is the second best selling blended Scotch in the world after Johnnie Walker.

So if you want to stretch your budget and are too posh for J&B, JW Black is far better than Red if neat, and Jamiesons is nice and smooth and about the same price as Black.

considering black for round 1. either that or jameson.

I started off with Grants a few years ago and still rate it as a "kuier with friends at a braai" option. These days I prefer Tullamore Dew, which I consider to be good on the rocks, or with a splash. I generally don't like my dram to be too watered down though. Also Like the Three Ships Bourbon Cask.

The lower-order Johnnies have failed to impress and J&B is putrid IMO. Vat 69 is considered to be far underpriced locally, by the tipplers from abroad.

When looking at pricier options for a treat, I opt for Greenore, Connemara (spot the trend), or Macallan Amber.
