If it's just something for display in the cabinet, Monkey Shoulder is a safe bet ... Nothing overwhelming, nothing wow with a nice looking bottle.
Fill it with weak teaI have a Monkey Shoulder bottle sitting on my shelf. I considered filling it with cheap whiskey when it was done, but now it just stands there empty instead![]()

Hey guys, am looking to get a bottle of whiskey for a friend, trying to judge based on a range of prices. What would you guys recommend for R350 -R500 price range? (I already have some options above this but any recommendations for R500-R700 are also welcome)...

great idea, but try and haul your mate along with you so that you can get an idea of his preference, I'm an Islay fan, I like the peaty, medicinal whiskies, some of my mates puke at the idea of an Islay as they prefer Speyside or even Irish
I have a friend celebrating his 30th birthday soon and he enjoys a good (in his mind) whiskey. He enjoys JW Black but are there any other suggestions for something like JW Black that I could get him?
Budget is R500
Thanks. Will read up about those 2Ardbeg 10 in my opinion, the best value for money in that price range, however it's highly dependant on the person enjoying peat.
The closest I can think of is Talisker 10, a principal malt in JW Black, only catch is it goes for around R600 now.
Thanks. Will read up about those 2

The only thing happening now is that I want them for myself...I forgot to mention, Highland Park 12 is often toted as the best single malt for someone new to single malts, since it's considered very balanced.
Alternatively you could look at sherried malts like Aberlour 12 or Glendronach 12, well within your price range and great whisky but nothing like JW Black.
What about the Japanese whiskey like NIKKA Japanese Black Pure Malt Whisky?
Think I should go for it as it is something "else".Nikka's good, makes for a nice gift too due to the nice packaging with the kanji on it.
