Had a couple of Balvenie "The Doublewood" last night, will definitely finish the bottle

I really like the three ship 5 yr old.
Unique taste.
Bains as well

If Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are simple easy drinking scotches then I'd give it a pass.

You won't be missing much. Glenlivet (12) is very much like the Singleton you mentioned, more citrus and less wood, but about as boring.

Nice collection.
I tasted them all besides the Nectar. Heard its the bomb

Oddly enough, that is my least favorite of the lot. Gun to my head, I would honestly have to go with the Original as my go to variation as far as GM is concerned. It is arguably the least prestigious of the lot, but I find it the least "effort" to drink. Not nearly as complex as any of the others, making it a very laid-back, good value single malt.

I'm slowly getting into Whiskey... Really starting to enjoy it now but still struggle with it neat.

Take it easy, and screw what anyone else says. If you find it easier to give it a splash or two of water to make it more palatable, then go for it. Life is too short, and whisky too expensive, to not enjoy it. Screw etiquette, it's about the enjoyment.

Ease into it. It is such a diverse culture, and it will be a shame if you can't fully get into it because you don't enjoy it. Sooner or later you'll figure out how you like it, and then the fun really begins.

Yeah for sure, I'm not shy with the water but I don't want to dilute it too much so that I don't taste enough whiskey.
It also helps if I start off with a craft beer or two and then switch to whiskey. Whiskey still a bit 'hard' when I am stone sober.

It is also good to get away from litres of beer and sugary drinks.

For sure. I found it easiest to get used to when my whisky was as cold as possible without ice. I would have a frosted glass and leave the bottle in the fridge a little while before enjoying. Now a days I'm all about the experimentation. I won't mess up the more premium brands, but my R300- and below bottles are fair game.

I went thru the same thing. I used to always drown it with water. So never really got the full flavour benefit.
Just recently i started having it either neat or with a teaspoon of water per single shot. The single malts I like neat. The cheap blends with the dash of water.

For some whiskies i found the water brings out more flavour.
For me, the ice does not let much flavour out.

I had the Black Grouse recently. Lovely stuff.
It goes down well neat, whereas the Famous Grouse requires a dash of water.
But thats just me

in most cases, you should add water to your whiskey.

The way I taste a new whiskey is to first take a small sip, neat. Then add a little bit of water - tap, approx one tablespoon per shot. Swirl it around to mix and taste again - you'll be amazed at the flavours.

For everyday drinking, I add about 1/3 water.
A whiskey of the year judge taught me that you need to typically bring down the alcohol content to around 30%, as more than that kills most people's sense of taste. It's only a guideline of course, but I found it works for me.
First tasting it neat before thinning it out is important.

I like to taste neat first. Then add one block ice. Then remove ice and add a splash of water.

Three different tastes! :)
