With whisk(e)y generally being quite a pricey drink in SA, what is everyone's affordable go-to drink in the sub-R300 bracket?

I used to treat myself to a Glen Grant every once in a while but I decided to change it up and I bought a bottle of Bains the other day from Checkers Liquor. It was in a nice box set with a solid square glass/ice mould doohickey which I will admit is a bit gimmicky. I paid R259 for it at the time, and it goes down surprisingly well with a few rocks to keep it chilled.

The box looked similar to this, albeit with one glass and a mould instead of two glasses:

Sold out at Makro Milnerton...been back twice...some twat bought 27 bottles.
Just collected my order From the branch in Ottery. Their admin is terrible but got it at the end . They might still have stock

Bains
Three ships 5yo
Three ships bourbon cask finish
Loch lomond range from checkers (most are sub 300).
Jim beam (whatever the white label is) isn't bad either.

Three Ships has a VERY smokey flavour that I don't love.

Sub-R300 is Glen Grant Major's Reserve or plain Grants for me.

I had Ballentines once.

We ended up in Friars in Grahamstown at 3AM with sunglasses on, it was raining and in the middle of winter, we ended up losing one of our mates and only found him the next day at around 11AM...

Needless to say I probably won't be drinking it ever again :p

But how did it taste?

According to your experience it must have gone down rather well.

Just had the Glenlivet Founders Reserve, wow what an amazing whiskey...Fragrant and so tasteful. Love it

And CHEAP, right? In my opinion if you need to get used to Scotch whiskys, that's the one to have.

I see Whiskey Live is from the 6th to the 8th April in Cape Town. Anyone know what the tickets include or conditions? ie amount of tastings etc

If it is like the one we had in JHB you get a number of points loaded on the card when you get there. Then each tasting deducts points from 1-5 depending on the type of whiskey

Thanks. How was the one in Joburg?

I went last year and i think it was 10 tickets included and an extra 10 if you downloaded an app about whisky. You could also buy extra for I think R100 for 10. And yes, the amount of vouchers handed over for each dram depended on the whisky. A good idea for freebies btw is to join a tasting, they are quite liberal with dishing it out.

By the end of the night it was a bit of a free for all though and most of the stalls weren't even taking vouchers. Black Bottle were particularly free and easy with their cocktails and I remember swigging Johnny Blue for some time without handing over anything.

I'd be there this year for definite but I only arrive back in CT the day after :(
