A fellow peathead...where's the Laphroiag then?

I've got various bottlings from of all but one of Islay's distilleries being Kilchoman for some strange reason.

When I started on my whisky journey > 20 years ago, I was an instant peathead (Laphroaig 10 is what got me into whisky) and my collection, which started very slowly, revolved purely around Islay. As I got older so I started venturing to other regions but my first love will always be Islay.

I'll keep my eyes pealed for th Big Peat 2011-2013, I go into any bottle store that I drive by. Do you have the first or second batch of the Winter Storm? I didn't get them from Makro last year so I bought 2 bottles of batch 2 recently.

All my GF experimentals are from batch 1, including Winter Storm.

They only did a batch 2 of the Winter Storm, I'm slightly disappointed that I didn't get batch 1 but I'm also kinda happy I got batch 2. That'll be my second child's 21st present, my first will be getting a bottle of Chichibu The First.

Geeze, it's like looking into a mirror...I got a Laphroaig 10 as a b'day gift 20 years ago from a friend and was instantly hooked.

Also love the Irish stuff, especially Teeling.

For me one of the ultimate bottles that combines everything I love in Whisky, is the Longrow 18yo...difficult to find but luckily I have a few in my collection.

It might be interesting to know how the whisky passion got started.

I was not hooked instantly, in 2010 I was going through duty-free and I bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 15 and Johnny Walker Gold(The Centenary Blend). Opened them both and I did not enjoy it at first. So I resorted to drinking it from a beer glass filled with ice. Those 2 bottles eventually grew on me, especially the Glenfiddich(I now have 19 different Glenfiddich bottlings in my collection). Since then I've actively pursue any whisky tasting event and I've amassed a fairly decent collection.

At first I didn't enjoy the Islay whiskies but the beloved Uigeadail opened my eyes.

On topic of reasonably priced whisky, one of the whisky bloggers I follow is a local lady by the name of Jeannette Wentzel. She wrote about Glen Moray Single Malt Port Cask Finish. I've seen these at Liquor City and after she rated it excellent I decided to pick up a bottle.

So Liquor City is bringing this in and they are retailing the Port Cask, Peated Cask and Chardonnay Cask bottlings at R269 a bottle at the moment. This is a Speyside NAS single malt for less than R300.

I bought a bottle of the port cask and a bottle of peated cask. I opened the port cask over the weekend. What a lovely dram. Uncomplicated and delicious, and does really well with the addition of a few drops of water. My rating - very good. I'm quite looking forward to the peated cask but will only open that after the current bottle is done and at R269, I will pick up a bottle of the chardonnay cask finish as well.

My suggestion is to give this a try.

Here's the blog post that got me interested.

Thanks for the info. I sent my SO to pick up 2 bottles of the peaty one to try out.

Picked up one of the Glen Moray 12

Initial thoughts, very light both in colour and texture. It's an easy drink so far... Let's see how the palate accepts it

Shinobu Blended Whisky
50% Malt and 50% Grain, this whisky is expertly blended to create a silky, buttery whisky, that finishes with a pleasant bitterness and lots of woody flavours. Blending Whisky is an art that takes patience and precision, both qualities that master distiller, Mr. Ken Usami, holds dear when making Shinobu’s blended whisky. In blending malt and grain whisky, the blender must know how the different products will interact with each other and with wood they are to be aged in, and most importantly, how the components of the blend will come together as a whole. It is a tricky process, that can result in superbly elegant whisky. Expect a candied-nut sweetness, coupled with buttery coconut, sandalwood, and vanilla. Shinobu Blended Whisky is a tasty, easy-to-like Japanese whisky at a great price point!

Only saw this when I got home and opened it... As much fun as that might seem no, they just neglected to remove it

And the scanners at exit didn't pick it up ? Now you know where to get free whisky.

Trying to remember if the store even had scanners - its the local Liquor Boys store - very small so who knows

Too bad their selection isnt that great

I never really appreciated the QC. I have an open bottle at home that hasn't been touched in years. Perhaps I should give it another go....
